The album is different - as the title indicates the tracks are taken from the recent animated film 'Curious George', and given how great the opening track 'Upside Down' is and the depth of other animation soundtracks such as the Lion King I was very hopeful. Although it isn't all that I hoped I think it's great
As I've already mentioned the opening track is 'Upside Down', a very light, melodic and in typical Jack Johnson style, mellow, with uplifting lyrics about trying to change things and achieving what others say you can't, all done with the innocence of youth.
Track 2, Broken, has a catchy melody heavily based on guitar and is a nice little track focusing on moving forward with someone you care about and realising how complete life can be.
The third track, People Watching, is one of my favourites, probably because I too love people watching. The tune and lyrics are simple but paint a lovely picture of people watching each other go about their daily business.
Wrong Turn, track number 4, is a much slower track and a little solumn focusing on a split up, where one person decides to leave, leaving the other waiting hoping they'll change their mind but in vain. Track 5, Talk of the Town, picks the pace up a little, with a soft acoustic guitar track, relating to the need to young people to be where the action is, where it all happens.
'Jungle Gym', the 6th track, the shortest on the album at 2 minutes 53 seconds is a little more upbeat, and like the bulk of the album is very 'catchy', and focuses on the big city - the human jungle and how a youngster perceives it, providing some thought provoking lyrics, making you reminisce about how simple things were when you were young
The next track, 'We're going to be friends' is a sweet track, highlighting the friendship making process of a child realising they have things in common with another, and how spending time with others can make them happy - again bringing memories and feelings from many many years ago come back.
Track 8, 'The sharing song', is also poem like, with regular rhyming lyrics which bring a smile to my face, teaching the importance of sharing and not being spiteful and how giving can bring enjoyment. This then flows into the next track, 'The 3 R's', which is not the traditional 3 R's but 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle', which is the tag line from the chorus of the song which is meant to teach kids the basics of being environmentally friendly (many adults could do with listening to this too !)
'Lullaby', the 10th track on the album, and is lyrically interesting as it has lyrics about not being able to sleep !! but is a yet another lovely tune that makes me smile as it is something that everyone can relate to. The next track 'With my own hands' covers the emotions of a young persons innocent belief that they can change the world, the track which features Ben Harper is performed with only the faintest strumming of an acoustic guitar for accompaniment for the majority of the track, with the guitar becoming stronger as the track progresses.
The penultimate track, Questions, slows the track down again, which is a little disappointing as I like albums to build up towards the end. The last true track is titled 'Supposed to Be', this is a piano rather than a guitar based track and again is a little slow and down beat which hints at being stuck in a bit of rut.
There is one other track on the album, but this in another version of track 9, 'The 3 R's', but with a funkier synthesised beat giving it an almost rap type feel.
The only other thing to cover is the casing; instead of coming in a 'tradtional' plastic case it comes in a colourful thick cardboard wallet, with a colour booklet (instead of an inlay) with cute pencil drawings of characters from the Curious George film and full lyrics for all of tracks

Review of Curious George (Original Soundtrack) [Digipak] - Jack Johnson
Advantages: It's Jack Johnson, Very Sing-Alongable, "Cute", great for kids and adults alike Disadvantages: "Cute", Not his best work lyrically.
...and Lullabies for the film Curious George" I was... well curious. Now I have heard it, Jack has laid my fears to rest.
It's hard not to love Jack Johnson. It's difficult not to hear his music and smile. It is the kind of music that on even the drollest of days whisks you away somewhere, and within the first strum of his guitar you find yourself laying back on a beach with a brew in one hand and smoking a.... urm.... well you get the picture.
This ... ...bills it self as a children's CD, adult fans of his work will love it too. While the lyrics are perhaps not as deep as I have come to expect, I must admit, try as i might, i can not seem to avoid singing along to many tracks on the album.
The CD is musically as sound as ever, and Jack's distinct voice seems improved once again.
The CD tells the story of the movie. In fact, in writing the music, Jack was tasked with giving voice to a character who ...

...and Lullabies for the film Curious George"). And secondly: it's created with enough tongue-in-cheek-ness that it is still suitable for adults!
You can tell just by the titles of some of the tracks such as "The Sharing Song" and "We're Going to be Friends" that their appeal is largely centred around young children. Intelligent, thought-provoking lyrics are replaced with more child-friendly ones, but the flawless vocals and catchy melodies remain. ... ...and tracks such as new-release "Upside Down" provide a break from more childish tracks.
Would I recommend this CD for a child? Yes.
Would I recommend it for an adult? Yes!
It's very chilled out, but fun too - and should be viewed within those parameters. Take it with a pinch of salt and enjoy it for what it is, not by way of comparison to Johnson's other material, as it's too different to do this.

Advantages: Has his great hit upside down. Disadvantages: very childlike rythms and lyrics, not his usual acoustic relaxing music.
At first I wasn't really a big jack johnson fan, all of my mates were listening to him day in day out. After hearing it alot I started to enjoy it more and more. Now I am quite a big fan of his. However, when I bought this CD in the shop I thought bargain, quite cheap with his new hit song ''upside down''. When I got home and played it, that was the only song I could bring my ears to listening too. I was very disappointed with the songs and lyrics. ... ...nursery or at home because it makes you 3-5 year old sing along. Its not quite the same as all of his other albums, have a listen to some of his songs on you tube eg. 3 R's, lullaby, we're going to be friends, jungle gym and with my own tw hands before you buy this CD. ...
