Eminem is arguably the greatest lyricist of our time. The English language seems to bend backwards for him, instead of the other way around. Other then his lyrics, his voice and the power behind it are superb, and the songs are just plain GOOD. He's created two perfect albums, and two other good ones-- now he has released Curtain Call, his greatest hits album.
As we all know, the job of a Greatest Hits album is not to create a CD of the fan's favorites; it is to assemble all of the hit SINGLES and arrange them on one CD, sprinkled with a few new and/or unreleased songs. Curtain Call does just that. The Intro is snazzy, and the three new songs all bring something new to the table-- Fack is silly, but catchy; Shake That is good song, but feels more like a Nate Dogg song then an Eminem one; and finally, When I'm Gone shows a retrospective Eminem, and I think it is one of his best tracks.
As for the arranging of the other hits, I approve for the most part. I strongly feel that "Mockingbird" should not be on this album, as it fails to create the emotional impact as Hailie's Song, which was the more popular song with the radios and fans alike. "Superman" should have been on here, as it is a single that the radio still plays to this day. Finally, I think that the version of Guilty Conscience on this album should have been the Radio Version, because it contains that catchy chorus which the album version did not. Other than those little flaws, all of the songs are well deserving of their place on this album of hits.
The bonus CD, "Stan's Mixtape," has a great concept. However, I think it would have worked better if it were made up of seven songs Eminem and a buddy were featured on, as opposed to a few of those and a few tracks from his previous album. Including "Dead Wrong featuring The Notorious BIG", "$#!* on You featuring D-12," and "Renegade featuring Jay-Z" were great choices. However, I feel the other album tracks on this Bonus CD should have followed the same concept as the others. Examples of the songs that could have been on this are "Forgot About Dre featuring Dr. Dre," "Patiently Waiting featuring Fifty Cent," and any of his songs with Royce Da 5'9". Otherwise, good bonus CD.
