Ok, first and foremost, I will warn you that in the quotes in this review, there can and will be very naughty language and references to drugs.
As such, everyone under the age of 18 scroll down humming Yankee Doodle and click Exceptional, quoting "reddragonflame, we love you".
Seriously, I mean it, I won't be held responsible for corrupting your minds.
Last chance.....
Alright, with the young whippersnappers safely out of the way, let us begin. Eminem. Ah yes, he doesn't even need an introduction does he? Everyone knows who he is. He's the white rapper who swears a lot and has come under fire for many reasons, including his violent and explicit lyrics, a track he released that was deemed racist, bringing his daughter into the spotlight on numerous occasions, openly talking about drugs and fighting... in fact, the man even has a serial killer who used him as an idol!
He's surrounded by controversy ("I thought you said no introduction!") primarily for his audience age range. His dark and haunting lyrics from songs such as "Kim" (which, by the way, I recommend you listen to once and once only, on a low volume, with no wife/children in the room) conflict drastically with slapstick silly songs like "Big Weenie" and "Lose It". Because of this, kids who love the bouncy tunes end up listening to the nastier tracks he's produced.
Because of the controversial and often plain evil styles and lyrics Eminem uses, his released stuff is generally relatively weak. Which is where this album immediately trips up. But before I go into that, let's talk about the songs.
DISCOLOGY ------------------ 1) Intro Also known as "Curtains Up" on his previous two albums. A brief introduction with mild "Shooo bee doo" lyrics, leading on immediately into the next song. A pretty daft skit, but short none-the-less. Makes you smile first time round.
~~~~~~~~~~
2) Fack Ooh, guess what this song is all about! Now, Eminem is a man. As such, he has... urges. He tells us about them in this song. He talks about it in... a very graphic way. In fact, I'm listening to it now for the first time in a while with a look of amusement and disgust on my face. Basically, this song is a slap in the face of everyone wanting to censor him. He even says "No, not f**k, I said Fack". He does like the normal things though, like porn stars and... hamsters?
QUOTE OF THE TRACK "I like boobs, boobs, boobs Now see that gerbil? Grab that tube"... I think I'll leave it at that for this quote
~~~~~~~~~~
3) The Way That I Am This song is not one of my favorite Eminem songs ever. It has far too boring a tune to hold my attention, and even though the lyrics are fantastic they are spat in a monotonous way. None-the-less, it's an angry and powerful track, with a very catchy hook and some really long going rhymes - something Eminem is most famous for. If you want this, I recommend having a look for the Greenday remix; the brilliant guitar work of Time of your Life couples well with these lyrics.
QUOTE OF THE TRACK "I'm so sick and tired of being admired That I wish that I would just die or get fired"
~~~~~~~~~~
4) My Name Is I have major objections to this. I really quite like this song. It's an old piece, but has a great opening verse and some genius lyrics. He got in major trouble for this song, by the way. This sparked off the infamous case where his mum tried to sue him for mentioning that she did drugs. Ok, so I bet you're wandering why I don't like this song. Well, I do, just not this version! They censored it! A freakin' Eminem song on a bloody Eminem album and they censor it. A far bit really; most of the second verse has been altered to take out any homophobic remarks. The new version sounds dumb. End of story.
QUOTE OF THE TRACK "Hi kids, do you like violence? Wanna see me stick nine-inch nails through each one of my eyelids?"
~~~~~~~~~~
5) Stan This is one of the most well known and probably one of the best tracks Eminem has ever released. Dido is fantastic by singing the calming and soothing chorus, whilst Eminem raps through the eyes of an obsessive and insane fan who dedicates his life to his idol; Eminem himself. It's one of the most thought provoking, shocking, and passionate songs ever, and it hits close to home too; talking about self harm and suicide is always a brave thing to do in an album aimed at teenagers. What's interesting about this song is the way it's written; it's a series of letters, two letters and one tape from Stan and a letter from Eminem at the end. The alarming tone Stan adopts in the third verse always sends chills down my spine, especially after listening to the beautiful vocals of "Your picture on my wall, it reminds me that it's not so bad"
QUOTE OF THE TRACK "I hope your conscience eats at you and you can't breathe without me!"
~~~~~~~~~~
6) Lose Yourself The track that was released alongside 8 Mile, featuring on it's soundtrack. I'm not really a fan, it's just not catchy enough and something like "Run Rabbit Run" would have been far better. The guitars are a great introduction though, and the lyrics are heavy sounding when paired with the pounding beat.
QUOTE OF THE TRACK The whole of the second verse. It'd take far too long to type, but the ongoing rhymes are just mind blowing.
~~~~~~~~~~
7) Shake That (STAR TRACK) Best song on the album. Easily. This original track features a throbbing, pulsing beat and minimal instruments, focusing instead on clever lyrics from Eminem and Nate Dogg, who stars on this track. Nate steals the show with his verse, although he often does on tracks he stars in. His voice is deep, contrasting against Eminem's nasal qualities.
QUOTE OF THE TRACK "Two to the one, from the one to the three I like good p***y and I like good trees Smoke so much w**d you wouldn't believe And I get more ass than a toilet seat"
~~~~~~~~~~
8) Sing for the Moment GRR I hate this song! It's just awful! Trying to be controversial and digging up old fights sounds good but it doesn't work! Talking about the youth of today acting aggressively and violently is maybe a bit too close to home to be entertaining. The chorus sucks, the tune sucks... the whole song is just too hit and miss. Even the lyrics never sound outstanding; probably because over the beats you can hardly hear them. Shame
QUOTE OF THE TRACK "These critics crucify you Journalists try to burn you"
~~~~~~~~~~
9) Without Me This song, on the other hand, is great! This was when Eminem probably became a big part of my life, since this was what convinced me to buy his album. And then shoot a man. With a fantastic and fast paced rhythm coupled with fantastic tongue-in-cheek lyrics, Eminem really steals the show in the third verse.
QUOTE OF THE TRACK "A tisk-it, a task-it, I'll go tit-for-tat wit' Anybody who's talking this 'n that s**t"
~~~~~~~~~~
10) Like Toy Soldiers I cry every time I hear this song or see the video. See, in the video, the rapper portrayed as being killed is Proof, who was shot and killed earlier this year for real. Since he is my favorite artist ever that was a major blow for me, and the peacefulness of this song and the chorus is just overwhelming. This time, the passion is spent on making the song emotionally charged as opposed to violent.
QUOTE OF THE TRACK "Bit by bit, torn apart We never win but the battle wages on... For toy soldiers"
~~~~~~~~~~
11) The Real Slim Shady Hmph. To be honest, I don't like the fact that the saddest song on the track is slapped next to this one, but hey, I'm just the sucker who paid for the album. Ok, how do I talk about this... you've heard it, I can guarantee that. In the video he spits in the onion rings, remember? Nasty. It's a slapstick song that sparked numerous responses and parodies: One from Wierd Al, one from Christina, and one from a random NYC rapper who combined the previous two and stuck a verse in of his own.
Sadly, the song isn't one of his best at all, and the cheekiness is kinda lost compared to some of the anger and sorrow on this album.
QUOTE OF THE TRACK "Will Smith doesn't have to cuss in his raps to sell records Well I do, so f**k him and f**k you too"
~~~~~~~~~~
12) Mockingbird This is a sad song again, talking about how much he loves his daughter and his adopted daughter. He even talks about how he misses Kim. The kicks in the beat are annoying though, sounding like a key hitting a radiator. It finishes with the nursery rhyme that shares it's name with this song.
QUOTE OF THE TRACK "And if that mocking bird don't sing and that ring don't shine Imah break that birdies neck I'll go back to the jeweler who sold it to ya And make him eat every carat, don't f**k with dad"
~~~~~~~~~~
13) Guilty Conscience The video for this song rules, but the single version is not as hot. It's basically Eminem versus Dre as the Devil versus an angel. It's pretty fun to listen to, but the news report style interludes get a bit annoying - while the video joins them up with a hook, this has static followed by a scenario.
QUOTE OF THE TRACK Dre - "Alright, calm down, relax, start breathing" Em - "F**k that s**t you just caught this b***h cheating While you at work she's with some dude trying to hit off? F**k slitting her throat, cut this b***hes head off!"
~~~~~~~~~~
14) Cleaning out my Closet Another crap song. The tune is teeth gratingly bad, the lyrics lack any kind of punch, and it all ends up sounding more like a moan than anything else. I can't stand any part of this song.
QUOTE OF THE TRACK Sorry, there really isn't one.
~~~~~~~~~~
15) Just Lose It This was the first single on the Encore album. Eminem actually appears naked in the video, something that is often believed to be staged. There was no magic tape... he was actually naked. Classy. Anyway, this song upset Michael Jackson for the opening verse and music video, which showed Jackson sat on a bed with children bouncing around on it. The reaction meant Eminem left a response in the Encore album, where he puns almost every MJ song ever.
QUOTE OF THE TRACK "They say I was running buck naked Telling little old ladies 'Touch my Body!'"
~~~~~~~~~~
16) When I'm Gone The last original song, and technically the last song on the album. Eminem basically calls it a day, talking about how the stress has built up so much he just wants to quit and live a normal life with his family. This was shortly before he was found to be addicted to sleeping tablets and suffering from exhaustion, causing him to cancel a tour early.
QUOTE OF THE TRACK "When I'm gone, just carry on Don't mourn, rejoice Everytime you hear the sound of my voice"
~~~~~~~~~~
17) "Bonus" Track - Stan (Live with Elton John)
Just read the Stan description. Then add in the fact that this has a totally different tune, a rather worse-for-wear sounding Eminem on vocals, and Elton John sounding like he has a dead animal shoved up his backside providing the chorus. This is a total waste of a track.
~~~~~~~~~~
So, since Eminem is one of my favorite stars, why do I hate this album so much? It trips up where every "Best Of" album does; it isn't his best. Sure, it's the best of his released stuff, but that's primarily tripe. When you hear songs like "Never Enough", "Amityville", "Criminal", and "Till I Collapse" you realize what a good musician he is, but hearing "My Name Is" again doesn't do anything.
The problem is, to buy this album you need to be a fan. To be a fan you need to have heard his other stuff, not just what was released. So essentially, you're getting more of the same. It wasn't until right up to the release it was even advertised as a "Greatest Hits" CD. And even though he is great and the songs are on the large pretty good, I still feel robbed. I know all of the songs already, and the only original track you'll even listen to more than once is "Shake That".
The bottom line? If you want the released tripe from this otherwise brilliant performer, knock yourself out. If you listened to a song like "Square Dance" and fell in love with the music through that, don't touch it. Just... don't. You'll only lose respect for him.
EMINEM - Curtain Call. And so for his 5th mainstream album we are given a selection of slim shadys greatest hits from classics like My Name is and Guilty Conscience up to the more recent and brilliant When im Gone. So how does it fair up....
Things are looking good at this point, a familiar start to therefore what should be ... ...it anyway :D Curtain Call is available from all major music retailers as well as online for an aproximate price of £7.99. There is also a special edition available which includes Stans Mixtape - A small collection of EMINEMs personal favourite tracks, including some by D12 for £12.99
Despite FACK this is an essential purchase for any Hip/Hop fan or simply anyone with a good taste in music. The curtain maybe closing.... but his music lives on. (RIP ...
Advantages: Has some new music inc a nice end-of-career song Disadvantages: Most of it is old songs (well, it is a greatest hits album)
...now its time for the Curtain Call. As the expression goes, all great things must come to an end. This is the end of an era for one of rap's, and music's, biggest stars. In my opinion, he was one of the biggest stars of the music industry over the past decade, singing with the likes of Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg and also 50 cent. I grew fond of listening to his vocal talents ever since i heard him for the first time ( The Real Slim Shady). Now for the album ... ...begins with another one of eminems concert style intros. This one has more of a 60's romantic style music, however, nothing special in this. 2 - FACK 8/10
This is one of the few tracks he sang especially for this album. He sings from a mans perspective about having sex with a woman and how he likes to f**k f**k f**k.
3 - The Way I Am 9/10
This song is uplifted from his previous album, The Marshall Mathers LP. This was his dedication to the media ...
Advantages: greatest hits with 3 new tracks and a live tune Disadvantages: none
After all his albums the time has come for Marshall to compile his greatest hits onto one cd. He has also managed three new songs - number 2; Fack. A very funny song about sex including putting a gerbil up his arse! (only em could get away with this). It also features the South Park voice in the chorus in the background which is very funny.
His second new song, number 7 on the album Shake That, with Nate Dogg who he has combined with on a couple ... ...Very good beat to this song. Nate contributes to about 40% of the lyrical content.
The third new song When I'm Gone was released as a single, this is about his relationship with Hayley and mostly Kim and indicates how his family have taken a back seat due to his rapping career and how he wants to spend more time with them. This is a great song that parents could relate to if they don't see their kids as much as they want to/should do.
Stan (live with Elton John at the 2001 Grammys) - 6:20
This new album from eminem consists of 3 new songs "Shake That" which is basiclly a club type song featuring Nate Dogg. The lyrics on this track are great and the song just flows all the way through. "Fack" is a sexually explicit joke track which most parents probably wouldn't let their children listen to. Personally this track isn't all that great but has its funny moments. "When Im Gone" is a song dedicated to his daughter Hailie Jade. There's not much swearing in this one though. Lose yourself is probably one of his most well known tracks from his film 8 mile and, lets face it, the track's great - one of his best, if not the best. My Name Is, is another track that I feel is being made as a joke but does have a serious point...
Advantages: wiked album. great songs Disadvantages: none
...Eminem is arguably the greatest lyricist of our time. The English language seems to bend backwards for him, instead of the other way around. Other then his lyrics, his voice and the power behind it are superb, and the songs are just plain GOOD. He's created two perfect albums, and two other good ones-- now he has released CurtainCall, his greatest hits album.
As we all know, the job of a Greatest Hits album is not to create a CD of the fan's favorites; it is to assemble all of the hit SINGLES and arrange them on one CD, sprinkled with a few new and/or unreleased songs. CurtainCall does just that. The Intro is snazzy, and the three new songs all bring something new to the table-- Fack is silly, but catchy; Shake That is good song, but feels more like a Nate Dogg song then an Eminem one; and finally, When I'm Gone shows...
Album Notes: It's hard to believe, given his gargantuan impact on popular culture, that Eminem had only released four full-length albums by 2004. That year's ENCORE showed the rapper's artistic vitality fading just a bit, but 2005's CURTAIN CALL, an overdue greatest-hits collection, helps remind audiences that Eminem produced a stunning string of singles in a short span of time. Naturally, CURTAIN CALL eschews the artist's most controversial material ("'97 Bonnie and Clyde," for example, from THE SLIM SHADY LP), focusing instead on his highest charters, like 8 MILE's "Lose Yourself" and introspective confessionals like "Cleanin' Out My Closet" (a rant against his mother) and "Mockingbird" (a tribute to his daughter). But even at his most sentimental and dramatic, Eminem displays a level of artistry that surpasses nearly anyone in hip-hop, if not pop music in general. Satirical, vicious, funny, and energizing, Eminem's material is never less than absorbing. CURTAIN CALL is packed wall-to-wall with winners (except maybe "Sing For the Moment," which reworks Aerosmith's "Dream On" in tiresome fashion), and at its most brilliant (like the self-reflexive romps "The Real Slim Shady" and "Stan") it's as era-defining as anything by N.W.A, Public Enemy, or even Bob Dylan. Though his individual albums are all pretty essential, CURTAIN CALL provides a valuable overview of an artist whose skills are unassailable, and whose role as a social gadfly remains as complex as ever.
Album Reviews: Entertainment Weekly (p.81) - "This hits package captures the half-decade moment when the tortured Detroit MC ruled the zeitgeist with whip-smart gross-out humor and jolting family confessions." -- Grade: A- Uncut (p.86) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "CURTAIN CALL sizzles with profane pop genius..."
