50 Cent is well known for being introduced to the music scene by Eminem, just as he was introduced to the industry by Dr Dre before him. This made them like a family, and that family environment was shown when they produced 50's debut track that saw him storm the charts, 'In Da Club'. Since then 50 has released a 2003 and 2005 album, and whilst he may not have matched the success of Eminem in a publicity kind of way, 50 has made his ambition clear to overtake Jay-Z as the richest man in hip hop and become the first billionaire of the industry. 50 is full of ideas that have helped him make this extra money, and that even features him branching out his 'family' by creating his own elite music group known as 'G-Unit'. With all these friends backing him, 50 has not only been able to make money through the art of music but also with his own clothing line, and he took on the ultimate publicity challenge - something that maybe Eminem wouldn't even do - when he agreed to go head to head with Kanye West on an album release date. Slated as a friendly rivalry, we have never seen anything that has revoked that statement, but 'Graduation' and 50's third album, 'Curtis' (titled after his actual real name) are two very different productions.
Whilst 50 did enter the business with that mainstream buzz, it was Kanye who could now say he has the most fans, as well pretty much everyone in the world currently knows he has a new album out - whereas I'm not people are so sure about 50, even though he has brought out a heap of single releases from the album in a bid for publicity. When I talk about the differences between the artists, no difference is more obvious than the background 50 comes from. Whilst Kanye can throw one hell of a hissy fit over not winning awards, for those of you who saw 50 Cent's appearance in the film 'Get Rich or Die Tryin' will know more about him. Things haven't been all rosey in 50's career, with beef coming out of his ears, perhaps most noticeably the feud with The Game who 50 actually made his prodigy at first. 50, although already planning a 2008 follow-up to 'Curtis', decided to make the whole album sales target with Kanye a bit more interesting by saying that if he didn't sell more albums than Kanye then he would never make an album again. Early reports are saying that preorders for Kanye's new album were outselling 'Curtis' by five to one.
1. MY GUN (3.12) - "Call it attempted murder." Rating (/5) - FOUR STARS
If you've ever listened to a previous 50 Cent album you will know that one of his favourite topics is guns.. or gats.. or his buddy. This song is no different, and we also get an early introduction of the n-word to the album. Reminder to Edemol, do not try and sign 50 Cent up for Celebrity Big Brother, he's too rich anyway. This does sound like it could have been taken from any other album, as 50 raps about his gun going off, although the production is good for what it is.
2. MAN DOWN (2.50) - "Get in the way, I'll murder dem." Rating (/5) - ONE STAR
Are these songs intentionally made to rile you up in a fight? You'd think so, this is probably the first time I've done a review and not had to bitch about how loving all the songs are, because this is clearly the opposite thus far. Whilst the first song was good at reminding us what 50 is all about, there wasn't really a need for this song just reinforcing his claims of the previous song.
3. I'LL SKILL KILL (3.41) - "Don't even look at me wrong when I come through the hood." Rating (/5) - FOUR STARS
Featuring Akon, this was one of the songs that hasn't been released yet that I was most exciting about hearing, and Akon's vocals are as distinctive as ever. The song really is quite good, but it does get on my nerves after a short amount of time. The fact that this isn't slated to be a single anytime soon makes it all the more special, even though the themes in the song are exactly the same as all the songs we've heard this far.
4. I GET MONEY (3.44) - "I run New York!" Rating (/5) - THREE STARS
Sorry but I can't help but thinking I have heard this song on a previous 50 Cent album, or maybe it just leaked on to the internet that early that I have heard it a million times already. Like how Akon gets slightly irritating in the previous song, the beat and the 'I Get Money' robotic voice get annoying as well over time. Probably a track you'll come back to in a years time and be able to listen to it, this track is about 50's wealth.
5. COME AND GO (3.29) - "Bring em in (kick em out)." Rating (/5) - ONE STAR
Ohhh my goooddd, there is an incredibly annoying piano like screeching noise repeated in every single second of this song, and it goes straight through my head. If the noise shut off after a little while it would probably be a good song, but I can't concentrate on anything except making sure my head doesn't explode.
What a relief, we come to one of the single releases on the album, and featuring Justin Timberlake and Timbaland it has the potential to be one of the biggest songs in 50's discography. When I heard this song was on the album I was going out of my way to try and listen to it, but it seemed like it hadn't leaked yet, so of course when it finally did leak I had given up trying. When I first listened to it though it didn't disappoint, and quickly made its way up my play count list. It seems that anything Justin puts his name to just lately comes out a success, and this seems to be one of his hottest songs ever. Unfortunately, I think due to the fact that the UK isn't a great 50 Cent lover, this song probably won't do as well as it should.
7. FOLLOW MY LEAD (3.18) - "Baby I could be all you need." Rating (/5) - THREE STARS
Robin Thicke is one of the fastest growing artists at the moment, and it wasn't a terrible idea for 50 to get him to feature on this track. In the States this is due to be 50's fifth released single off this album, although I think things are a bit different in the UK and I'm not sure even more than one song has been released off the album for our charts. But anyway, this is definitly going to be released as a single as a video has been made and everything. This is probably the closest 50 has ever came to a ballad in his career, and should be rewarded for that, although the feel for the song does not make it feel like a 2007 release. I think that's the Robin Thicke inspired infulence.
8. MOVIN ON UP (3.24) - "Yeah we gettin that dough." Rating (/5) - TWO STARS
Now I'm not one to insult the intelligence of someone a lot richer than me, but it's very typical of 50 Cent to have a song about movin' on up on an album, just talking about how he's getting better and better. This song is boring.
9. STRAIGHT TO THE BANK (3.11) - "Ha-ha-hahaha-ha." Rating (/5) - TWO STARS
At this point he feels like the days of Ayo Technology are gone and we're back into hearing about money once again, and whilst the song isn't awful I'm not surprised it only reached #32 in the American charts. My general impression is that America are getting pretty sick of this guy, and this will not go down as his greatest single release.
10. AMUSEMENT PARK (3.09) - "Shorty you ain't gotta take em panties off." Rating (/5) - FIVE STARS
I feel that we probably missed out on this being a UK released single due to the fact that are television channels would have a fit over its content. The whole song is very reminiscent of the release off his second album, 'Candyshop'. The whole amusement park/rollercoaster combination is just used to allude to sex, and whilst it maybe something we've heard one hundred times before it works really well.
11. FULLY LOADED CLIP (3.14) - "While Jay and Beyonce were hmm hmm kissing." Rating (/5) - THREE STARS
Every good 50 Cent album needs a diss track, and whilst I never knew there was any problem between 50 and Jay-Z, the opening lines to this song go hand in hand to 50 reportedly dissing Beyonce at the MTV awards. Whilst there isn't really anything defining about the sound of this track, it's enjoyable to listen to a couple of times.
12. PEEP SHOW (3.52) - "Now he we go." Rating (/5) - TWO STARS
Along with the track with Akon, this was always going to be one of the most anticipated as it features Eminem, who is like a privelage to hear from in this day and age. The speed of the song is very fast, and you can tell the tempo is better suited to Eminem than 50 because everything we've seen from Eminem just lately has been fast. The only problem with this is that Eminem doesn't come into the song until 2 and a half minutes through the song! I'm not sure that even warrants being said to be featured in a song, and the whole title of the song is a bit misleading and the song offers nothing that you can sing along to. Disappointing!
13. FIRE (2.50) - "I burn it down on stage I make it hot." Rating (/5) - FOUR STARS
Nicole Scherzinger, better known for being the lead in Pussycat Dolls, is continuing her solo assault on the music charts by getting an appearance on one of the biggest albums of the year. Young Buck also features, and the three make a very unusual team. The song is really quite short, but it's really good for what it is. Nicole has huge star appeal.
14. ALL OF ME (3.52) - "Ya body is callin me." Rating (/5) - TWO STARS
We're getting to a stage on the album where the guest appearances are just flooding in, and we all know that having earthshattering collaborations are a great way to sell albums. Mary J Blige features on this, and she has been the queen of ballads just lately, although this isn't going to be her typical assignment working with 50 Cent. A song more about a romance that isn't happening rather than one that has flourished into something beautiful, and for that the song never really becomes anything beautiful either.
15. CURTIS 187 (3.58) - "Push me n*gger, see what I'm about." Rating (/5) - TWO STARS
A song title matches the title of the album, we get to hear 50 rapping about himself. Boring.
16. TOUCH THE SKY (3.10) - "Hands up high." Rating (/5) - THREE STARS
There was such a huge deal made about Tony Yayo a few years back, so when he disappointed it kind of dented 50's reputation a bit. Luckily for us, Yayo returns to feature on this song and it is actually one of the best songs on the album. It's even better how the song is titled after one of Kanye West's biggest hits (the one with Pamela Anderson in the video). A good note to leave the album on.
Overall it is no surprise that people would rather pick up Kanye West's material than this, because whilst there are some new aspects to 50's character, there isn't really anything that screams out as being a bigger hit than most of the stuff Kanye has produced. I think it was impressive that 50 threw a ridiculously large amount of tracks on to the album for fans to get their money worth, but I think the one thing to take from the album is that someone needs to tell Eminem his half-assed attempts at featuring on tracks don't cut it anymore.
Advantages: good beats and production, good appearences Disadvantages: Frequently weak lyrics, many missable tracks
There are two ways to look at 50 cent's recent music, good music which appeals to the masses, or cheap, bubblegum hip hop. Before the brilliant 'Get rich or die trying', 50 cent was the great hope for not only new york city hip hop, but hip hop across the united states. We were promised no more bubblegum rap and his debut album did not disappoint. 2 Years later, it seems that mr.jackson has gone back on his word with the release of 'the massacre' ... ...lil bit, so amazing, build you up and outta control. Although he had several massive hits and undoubtedly produced an album which would not only satisfy rap fans but fans of other genres. Then we skip forward a further 2 years to see mr. 'no more bubblegum rap' cent back with his 3rd album 'Curtis'. 50 Cent promised it would sound like his pre get rich or die tryin days , this doesnt live up to that statement as we are treated with mere pop songs ...

Advantages: Great beats and hooks Disadvantages: Lyrics aren't as good as previous albums
Curtis is an album by 50 Cent that features producing and fellow vocals from awesome acts like Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Akon, Robin Thicke and the members of G-Unit along with many more. There are some very good tracks, "Ayo Technology", "I Get Money", "I'll Still Kill" are the main ones. In my opinion this album is no where near as good as 50 Cent's first album (Get Rich or Die Tryin'), however is not far off from being as good as The Massacre, ... ...hook.
Track 16 - Curtis 187 - Excellent yet underrated tune.
Track 17 - Touch the Sky ft. Tony Yayo - Really good lyrics and beat, very good rapping also.
Track 18 Bonus Track - Hustler's Ambition - Excellent track however was on Get Rich Or Die Tryin' Soundtrack.
If you get the album off iTunes then you get and extra two tracks - Smile (I'm Leavin') and I Get Money (Forbes 1-2-3 Remix). ...

Advantages: Consistently great production; A handful of fun material Disadvantages: Uninspired; uncreative; weaker hooks than previous albums; boring
to say the least, but his ability to write catchy hooks and ride his charisma to the top of the charts. But what happens when his ability to write fire hooks over fire production has even diminished?
That's when you get Curtis.
Don't let the album cover art and semi-self titled album name fool you,Curtis isn't one of those autobiographical, introspective, self-portrait albums. Nope, it's typical 50 with about half the charisma, the same rapping skills, and an utter lack of true bangers.
I'd be a liar if I said I didn't have a soft spot for "In Da Club", "Candy Shop", "21 Questions", "Disco Inferno", and other 50Cent club/love singles. I like them; they are good songs. Are they going to revolutionize the industry in terms of creativity? Of course not; but there's a reason why they were so popular. The three big singles on Curtis to me ...
Advantages: A few big tunes Disadvantages: Nothing apart from the singles are worth listening to
?Curtis?, a self-entitled release, was the third official solo effort from the Queens, New York rapper 50Cent in 2007. It was a pretty significant one of the time as its release was built up as one that would have 50 square up against Kanye West for sales against his ?Graduation? release. As it went, commercially, Kanye beat him, and although predictably, 50Cent didn?t quit as he said he would if he lost the sales war, he did still have something worth listening to (as a change from his last release in 2005).
1. ?Intro?
2. ?My Gun Go Off?
He takes things to a predictable place as he begisn the album and turns straight to the gun raps as he does the whole Gangsta Rap thing and comes with lots of murder talk. It does very little for him and offer nothing new whatsoever, so it sounds a bit pointless and starts this, his third, album to ...
