There are two ways to look at 50 cent's recent music, good music which appeals to the masses, or cheap, bubblegum hip hop. Before the brilliant 'Get rich or die trying', 50 cent was the great hope for not only new york city hip hop, but hip hop across the united states. We were promised no more bubblegum rap and his debut album did not disappoint. 2 Years later, it seems that mr.jackson has gone back on his word with the release of 'the massacre' with more commercial songs such as candy shop, just a lil bit, so amazing, build you up and outta control. Although he had several massive hits and undoubtedly produced an album which would not only satisfy rap fans
but fans of other genres.
Then we skip forward a further 2 years to see mr. 'no more bubblegum rap' cent back with his 3rd album 'Curtis'. 50 Cent promised it would sound like his pre get rich or die tryin days , this doesnt live up to that statement as we are treated with mere pop songs such as amusement park, follow my lead and ayo technology (with justin timberlake, yes the former nsync member) which seem to make this album more r&b than hip hop.
On a brighter not for fans of the multi platinum selling artist, Come and go is a sure hit with 50 Cent fans as it is in the mould of the classic 'In Da Club'. Production of the tracks is nothing short of brilliant, no matter how poor and weak 50's delivery lyrically wise is at times. There are several colloborations including 'Fire' with Nicole Scherzinger (Pussycat Dolls) and Young Buck, this is a very upbeat and high tempo number. 'Peep Show' features Eminem and is another hard hitter, somewhat for young ladies. 'All Of Me' is another smooth number featuring Mary J Blige, the rhythm and soul really takes over here and Blige adds to the flavour. The collaboration with Akon on 'I'll still kill' is above average, Akon delivers a thuggish side, something different to what we're used to and pulls it off well, reminiscent to the hit 'Snitch' featuring Obie Trice. Fully loaded clip is pretty self explanitory as we are treated to 50 explaining his street attitude in a hard hitter produced by Havoc of legendary rap duo Mobb Deep. Touch The Sky (ft. Tony Yayo) is 50 rappin about cars, money, girls, how he runs the rap scene, yeah...pointless, Yayo's part in the chorus and his verse is really annoying, a track to miss to be honest. 'My Gun Go Off' will please the street hip hop lovers, it's nothing new and uses alot of phrases from previous songs and the high tempo beat sounds familiar, so another track that you won't be capitvated by. Oh what do we have here, a song called Movin On Up, yeah sounds like about 5 of the other tracks. Another self explanitory track titled 'I get money' was released and is in all honesty a song which is aimed at 50's enemies, however, it is maybe not a diss song but has him boast of how much money he has, rather pointless.
In a summary, 50 Cent seems to have broken his promise that his bubblegum rap days are over. Tracks such as 'Fully Loaded Clip' don't seem to fit in, it doesn't sound right listening to the smooth 'follow my lead', then listening to a street hitter. There is nothing wrong with r&b, as some of the tracks, such as follow my lead (feat robin thicke) and ayo technology (featuring justin timberlake) are smooth and nice to listen to, but it sounds as if he has made a bunch of songs without thought of the direction of the album. The production comes from big names such as the legendary Dr Dre, eminem, will.i.am, needlz, the neptunes, akon, havoc and timbaland, and they do not fail. Many more appearences from other artists give this a different flavour. The album will sell, no doubt about that, but not because 50 Cent is a particularly great artist, but because it is pop music. Not a hardcore gangsta rap album as 50 cent seems to have moved on from that, but an eclectic bunch of tracks which will certainly appeal to the fans of pop, hip hop, r&b and soul. The general feel of the album is pretty much fake, all made up to sell records. Ironically, Kanye West stated in his recent hit 'Stronger' "Do anybody make real s**t any more?" With 50 cents latest album supposedly the most anticipated of the past 2 years, i'm not sure anyone does make real hip hop music anymore.

Advantages: Some Amazing Tracks which have a long lifespan. Disadvantages: Some tracks are "typical" 50 cent tracks, don't really push the boundries any further.
