Full review
The movie 'The Cutting Edge' was released in 1992 and, after a fairly mediocre soundtrack album was released in 1998, this year a new, Deluxe edition has hit the shops.

Not only does this album contain all the popular music tracks featured in the film and on the original soundtrack release, it also contains a large section of the original score by Patrick Williams (which if you are a fan of the movie is something to shout about).

The basic premise of 'The Cutting Edge' is that Kate Mosely (Moira Kelly) is a rich bitch figure skater who flunked out of the 1988 Winter Olympics, still kidding herself that it was her partner who made the error that cost them gold. Doug Dorsey (DB Sweeney) is the next big thing in Ice Hockey until a slam on the ice cost him some of his peripheral vision. Fast forward to 1990 and Kate has no partner and Doug can't get any decent hockey team to speak to him.

Enter Anton Pamchenko (Roy Dotrice), Kate's newest coach who has the crazy idea of turning Doug into a figure skater. Cue dislike, angst, stunning skating montages and some fabulous fighting between the two, until they final reach the 1992 Olympics in Albertville and realise that their working partnership has blossomed into love.

Sounds cheesy I know, but the movie just works.

Anyway, on to the soundtrack:

Street of Dreams - Nia Peeples
One of the training montage songs. An upbeat number, which is totally fitting for the time period.

Cry All Night - Neverland
Don't really remember this track particularly, so can't tell you whether it's good or bad.

Ride on Time - Black Box
Another montage song. I always liked this track from when it first came out anyway, but nice to see it here.

Groove Master - Arrow
This track is used mostly for the skating montages and a funny scene where Kate and Doug try and get up earlier and earlier to beat each other to the training rink. Another upbeat number.

It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over - Rosemary Butler
This track is used during the Mosely's New Years party and is a nice soulful version of the Lenny Kravitz's song. Slightly underused in the movie, but nice to hear it in full here.

Shame, Shame, Shame - Johnny Winter
Used when Doug goes home to tell his family that he's been figure skating. Again, it's underused in the movie, but nice to hear it here.

Turning Circles - Sally Dworsky
A lovely tune, used when Kate is in a reflective mood and skating alone on her rink. The song is quite beautiful and the artist Sally Dworsky has a lovely voice, although I hadn't heard of her before.

Baby Now I - Dan Reed Network
Used when Kate and Doug are celebrating their entry into the Olympics and kate insists on getting drunk and dancing all night. Solid song, not particularly my favourite though. I tend to skip it on the the CD.

I've Got Dreams to Remember - Delbert McClinton
Soulful song used when Doug is depressed at having a fight with Kate after their big victory. Don't hear much of it in the movie, but is a good song.

Feels Like Forever (Theme) - Joe Cocker
The big love theme from the movie and it's a corker. Diane Warren once again shows her skill as a songwriter and Joe Cocker (for once) does not make a meal of it all. This is a good song and an appropriate way to end the movie, after the 'did they didn't they win' ending.

And now onto the score...

Ich Namen Gita/Olympic Hockey
A fast paced number as Doug is racing to get to his hockey match on time.

Battle of the CDS
Doug and Kate fight over whether to skate to Mozart or to an original piece Doug has chosen (Patrick Williams writes).

Limo to Mansion/Nine Months Later
Played as Doug is driven to the Mosely mansion. This is on the theme of the rest of the score, but is underscored with a quick pulsing beat and a grand finale as we see the house.

Kate Skates Alone
This is played as we see Kate skate alone before Doug arrives. basically to show what an elegant skater she is. Classical in nature, but again on the theme of the score.

Chicago Practices
A fast up tempo piece of music when we see all of the skaters competing in the Chicago tryouts warming up. I usually skip past this track as it gets a little repetitive.

Hoedown
A piece that acts as the skate music for another couple. An ok piece, again on the central theme and a little repetitive.

Tequila
Used when Kate is getting drunk on tequila after the nationals. Another skip past-er.

Olympic Fanfare/Dubois and Gercel
All gets a bit samey at this point. the Olympic fanfare is nice, but can skip past the skate music.

Doug and Kate Get Angry
Again, this is on the theme of the movie. Doug and Kate fight and them become reflective. This music plays as they go their separate ways to think about it. Nice gentle piece

Russians Skate
An upbeat, russian style piece used when the Russians (Kate and Doug's main competition) skate.

Finale
This is the main skate by Kate and Doug - it's really this I bought the CD for. It's just a lovely piece of music and really fits with the chreography by Robin Cousins. Lovely!

End Credits
On the theme of the rest of the score and a repeat of the main skate theme.

As you can see, at 22 tracks this is an excellently detailed soundtrack and well worth the money. I already had the original soundtrack, but purchased this for the score music and was not disappointed.

A firm recommendation to all Cutting Edge fans and I think it would be worth a listen to those who've not seen the movie.

Available from most Music stores (mainly online) at or around £13.99.

Music clips from the CD are available on Amazon.com.
