Oran Mór is a West end of Glasgow pub situated where Byres road crosses Great Western Road - opposite the botanical gardens. It has been built into what used to be the old Kelvinside Parish Church. Refurbishment of Kelvinside Parish church started in 2002 and Oran Mór opened it's doors on the first day of the West End festival in June 2004. It has since grown to be one of the trendiest venues in Glasgow and attracts a mixed crowd. Oran Mór is Gaelic for "Big song" or "Great melody of Life".
Oran Mór is a massive building housing two restaurants, a whisky bar, a lounge bar, a nightclub, a ballroom and a private dining room. Advantages: Superbly written, witty, funny, and yet thought-provoking Disadvantages: If acted badly, is an insult to a superb piece
with the play came earlier this calendar year (the last academic year) when, as the final first year performance project for part of my group, I was cast as Eddie.
The play itself, as with most, if not all of Russell's work, is set in Liverpool. Taking place in the late 70's, and drawing many of it's cultural references from that era, it tells the tale of a soon-to-be-wed couple's stag and hen night's, both of which are, unwittingly, taking place in the same disco. Set entirely in the toilet area of the venue, the play's main focus is on the groups collective struggles to find companionship and a sense of belonging, both within their friendship circle and in the area as a whole.
The central female character is Linda, the bride-to-be. Her happy hen night with the girls is spoiled however, by the arrival of an old flame, Peter, who has long ...

If you are wanting a really good and funny summer read you won't go far wrong if you choose Raffaella Barker's "Hens Dancing" - as the book was published in 2000 I am probably preaching to the converted, but I have to admit this book was new to me when I read it last week.

Raffaella Barker was born in London in 1964 and moved to Norfolk when she was three. Her father is the poet George Barker, he had 15 children - Raffaella is the oldest of those by the novelist Elspeth Barker. . She recalls worrying about how to respond at school when asked how many brothers and sisters she had. She did not know the answer!!
Her debut novel Come and Tell Me Some Lies was published in 1994, followed by The Hook, Hens Dancing, Summertime, Green Grass, and the children's book Phosphorescence and A Perfect Life.
