Advantages: great fun, great songs Disadvantages: story a little weak
Daddy Cool is the brand new musical currently showing at the Shaftsbury Theatre in London's West End.
The Story
Daddy Cool tells the story of Sunny and Rose who fall in love despite being from two families torn apart by years of fighting. The musical is set to the music of Boney M.
The story starts in the Islands in 1990 with Sunny as a young boy, told by his grand mother that his mother in England wants him back home. We then join him in the present day, home in London, trying hard to make it in the music business with his group The Subsonics. Progress of the group is slowed by The Blade Squad, a rival group led by Benny, son of clubowner Ma Baker (Michelle Collins)
The two groups rivalry comes to a head when they enter into an MC Battle which leds to the shooting of one of The Subsonic members.

Advantages: Lively, Cheesy, colourful Disadvantages: Not good for die-hard Boney M fans
they unashamedly nicked a tried and tested one from West Side Story, which itself was inspired by Romeo and Juliet.
Looking back I don't really remember why we chose this musical, I think we thought it would be a fun slice of disco-cheese. If you have seen posters for it they make a big thing out of the stars for the show: Michelle Collins (Eastenders' Cindy Beale), Harvey (rapper with the So Solid Crew) and Javine (Eurovision entrant and the one who didn't quite make it into Girls Aloud). However they are actually more in supporting roles.
THE CAST AND PERFROMANCES
SUNNY (Dwayne Wint) is a young lad in love with music, his friends and his girlfriend. Wint has a lovely, sweet soulful voice slightly reminiscent of Lemar and carries off the lead role well.
ROSE (Camilla Beeput) meets Sunny at a club and they fall in love ...
Advantages: Bit of Fun Disadvantages: Won't grab you and there is better stuff on the West End.
I love musical theatre, in fact I love most forms of theatre. As such I was more than pleased when I landed the opportunity to see Daddy Cool.
Daddy Cool is to Boney M what We Will Rock You is to Queen and Mamma Mia to Abba.
Memories of clapping along to Ra Ra Rasputin in spangly platforms filled my head and off I trotted to the theatre.
It started well. In the Caribbean Islands we meet Sunny, a small child living with his grandmother. The vibe and setting lent itself well to the tone of Boney M songs. The smooth lilt of the tracks fitted just right. The young Sunny was probably about 9 years old and had energy and cheekiness by the bagful. He was immediately adored by everyone I was with and gave a good performance. This is what we had come for; a bit of feel good happy clappy theatre!
Then it all went wrong!
