Eels have always distilled a beautiful combination of melancholy and hope, this album simply makes it two pseudo-therapy classics in a row. After the textbook examples of how to marry creative upsurge with personal recovery, the still fine 'Electro-Shock Blues', Eels further refine their warm sonic nous on this album, quirks largely absent, experimentalism muted, a purer song if you can hold back vomit. It's simple stuff really, beautiful tunes that can hold you sound in their georgeous twilight, and move you time and time again. Mature maybe, but childlike wonder remains.
