The Eels have a distinctive sound, even though there’s a real mix of styles (barroom blues, folk, jazz, for instance). “The sound of fear” reminds me of Nirvana or the Pixies; “Grace Kelly blues” has a Tom Waits style brass section, and there’s a kind of They Might Be Giants feel to the whole thing, but I think that’s just because it’s so varied. “Flyswatter” and “I like birds” are favourites of mine. There are none I don’t like, although a couple of songs towards the end of the album don’t exactly grab my attention, and are a little on the dull side. I think the best track is “Mr. E’s beautiful blues”, with its mesmerizing tune, those sweet backing vocals, and it’s internal rhymes (“the ringmaster’s telecaster” and “the clown with a frown driving down…”). I’ll never understand why they saw fit to include it as an unlisted track, tacked onto the end. I think this song as good as anything they’ve done, if not their best. Overall, I like their previous 2 albums slightly more than this one, but there’s not much in it. E’s lyrics can be obtuse, but that makes them all the more memorable.

Advantages: I would say the best Ee's album, very lively Disadvantages: The design of the CD is good, but cardboard. So unless you keep it in a vacuum it will get ropey
