NAME OF LOCATION: Deva Roman Experience, off Bridge Street, at Chester.
BACKGROUND: Whilst walking up Bridge Street on a weekend trip to Chester, my boyfriend Robert and I were trying to find the toy museum (we were following the pedestrian black signs but never found it), we saw an advertisement for the Deva Roman Experience, which had a cut-out of a roman soldier and some red leaflets on it. Curious, we stopped to pick one up and decided to visit this instead of the nonexistent toy museum.

Advantages: Laser Quest, Sayers, Variety of Shops Disadvantages: Congested with tourists in season
Chester is an old Roman settlement (Deva) built on the River Dee. It has a wide appeal to tourists the world over and receives many million per year. Why do tourists flock to Chester in such large numbers then?
As said Chester is a Roman settlement and evidence can still e seen of this today, yet there is also mock Tudor front buildings, and more modern buildings all in close proximity which gives Chester a unique look not seen in many cities throughout the nation.
Chester is very good if you want variety of shops. There are all the usual national chain stores - Boots, BHS, Debenhams, Wollies, Virgin, HMV, McDonalds etc. Yet many smaller, more independent stores can be found - such as the F1 shop on Bridge Street Row, or 'The Gadget Shop' type stores, Bug and Natural World in the Grosvenor precinct.

Album Notes
Personnel: Deva Premal (vocals, tanpura, keyboards); Miten (vocals, acoustic guitar); Martyn Phillips (guitar, mandolin, violin, viola, keyboards, mini-Moog synthesizer, bass guitar, percussion, programming); Prabjote Osahn (violin); Izzi Dunn (cello); Praful (flute, bansuri, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, harmonium, keyboards); Manose (bansuri); Maneesh De Moor (piano, keyboards); Danny Thompson (double bass); Pete Lockett (frame drum, udo drum, tabla, percussion); Benjy Wertheimer (unknown instrument). Recording information: London, England (2005). Using traditional Hindu mantras as source material, singer Deva Premal creates lush, beautiful music that falls somewhere between chanting and ambient New Age. DAKSHINA will please fans familiar with Premal's soothing, contemplative vocal approach. Classical Indian instrumentation (tablas can be heard through much of the album) abuts contemporary synthesizer sounds and textures, creating an aesthetic that is ancient and modern at once. Yet it is Premal's rich, alluring vocals that take center stage here, especially when she stacks harmony parts, as she does on "Om Naman Shivaya" and "Aad Guray." These pillowy choral tracks sound as influenced by the Beach Boys as they do by conventional chant, and one has to marvel at Premal's ability to merge her Western and Eastern influences so seamlessly. Additionally, there is a deep sense of spirituality at the core of this music, making DAKSHINA a perfect companion to meditation, yoga, and alternative health practices.
