Dance Album Of... [Digipak] - Carl Perkins

Advantages: Good price, inspiring & funky!!
Disadvantages: A wee bit ancient...

...This is a compilation of some of the most successful artists who were topping the charts in 2003, although I personally find that the first CD has the better tracks - with the exception of Girls Aloud's 'Sound of the Undergound', 'Tell it To My Heart' by Lorenna, Kelly, 'U Can't Touch This' by Bean and Cyrus/MC Hammer, and Atomic Kitten's The Tide is High. The tracks are uplifting and I usually put this onto my CD alarm clock in the morning because it helps me to wake up and bounce out of bed! It is definitely a dance album, but full of great feel-good tunes such as 'I see you baby' and 'make luv' which make it suitable for listening to anywhere... In the car, in bed, at work/school + especially when you need some chocolate and music therapy! I have put most of the tracks onto my MP3 player so that I can listen to them when I'm bored... ...I got this album as a christmas present last year, so im not sure how easy it is to get hold of. I do know that large music shops like Virgin or HMV have it in stock and it is also easily available online. Prices do range depending on where you go, the cheapest I've seen it for is £7.00 the most expensive was £12.00. This Album is from the 1987 movie Dirty Dancing, which starred Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze in the lead roles. The film is based on a holiday camp in 1963, where a young girl Frances (Baby) (played by Grey) falls in love with the camps leading dance teacher Johnny (played by Swayze). This is where a lot of the inspiration for the soundtrack has come from; the soundtrack brings back memories from the film. Advantages: Not overlong at 10 tracks, gets better with each listen.
Disadvantages: Opening track not the strongest.

...All the best records take a few listens (at least) to reveal their true nature. On first play this sounded like a typical 2nd album - longer tracks, less up-tempo. A month on this has to be my favourite CD of 2007. Nearly all the 10 tracks have resolved into fantastic, atmospheric (and not always gloomy!) tales of urban life and escape. Great tunes underpin the songs, with the now-trademark steepling guitar riffs standing out most in the choruses. Some not unwelcome echos of The Smiths are to be found in the lyrics, most obviously in the title track, but tracks like Weight of the World and Escape The Nest are really uplifting, the latter also containing the finest moments on the album with its soaring, thrilling chorus.
