Advantages: Richard Ashcroft singing good songs is always an advantage Disadvantages: Will always be compared to the Verve, and it isn't as good
...you singing the chorus long after the growling guitar is suffocated. 'Music Is Power' follows, bringing Summery barbeques with friends. Aided by a Curtis Mayfield sampler, it should be a single when the weather starts to warm.
Current single 'Break The Night With Colour' hits the mark also, but only just. Equally at home on Radio 2 as it is on Radio 1, it would be appreciated if dear old Dickie was a fresh faced youth from Sheffield. Sadly, he's a war-beaten old warrior from Wigan and it shows as he limps along on songs like 'Words Just Get In The Way' and 'Sweet Brother Malcolm', while 'Why Do Lovers' couldn't be more suited for a wedding unless it ended with a cheesy DJ asking friends and family to join the happy couple on the dance floor.
Somewhat unsurprisingly for an album full of songs written over six years, it is a mixed bag...

...Lots Of Money)" and "Domino Dancing" are alldance classics from the duo of Tennant and Lowe.
Another highlight is the Pet Shops Boys duet with the late Dusty Springfield for the classic track "What I Have Done To Deserve This?" which shows the grace of Springfield's voice.
Other tracks like "Jealousy", "Being Boring", "DJ Culture", and "Was It Worth It" showed more melancholy hooks but still give the song more dance hooks. Even the band's cover of "Where The Streets Have No Name (I Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You)" is an amazing dance classic bringing U2 and Frankie Valli together for a dance.
"Discography" is a great introduction to the band's work. The material after this album is also superior to their work.
The great thing about the Pet Shop Boys is that they made the worlddance with a message. Hope they release some more soon....

Advantages: Classic pop mixed with orchestral sounds Disadvantages: "Geronimo" doesn't quite match the other tracks for class
...” and “Neptune’s Daughter”, the former largely consisting of Hannon doing short impressions of various authors. But it is the poppy elements that shine through the most. There is the spectacularly cheerful duo of “A Drinking Song” and “A Seafood Song” and the catchy “Geronimo” to get you dancing, but also more thoughtful tracks.
“When The Lights Go Out AllOver Europe”, an ode to the silver screen, has a tune that lives up to its name and “The Summerhouse” is quite simply stunning. This piano-led ballad evokes memories of a childhood you never had, but always wished you did have. It is in my book the finest track the band has ever recorded.
The wordplay from Hannon is, as ever, second to none. Comedy comes to the fore on tracks like “Don’t Look Down” as he sings “And then a God / Who really ought not to exist / Sticks out a great big hand...
