Yet another album by Michael Jackson to hit number one, 'Dangerous' is Michael Jackson's fourth solo album and a huge step in a different direction from his earlier titles such as 'Thriller' and 'Bad'. It is such a shame that the album that was produced in 1991 is only encircled in bad publicity - the beginning of his child molestation accusations. I would like to at this point remind everyone, that we do not buy this geniouses life, we buy his music, and that is what i would like to focus this review on. The musical phenominan that is Michael Jackson.
Michael's album 'Dangerous' tries to move on to something new. It achieves this well, but with encircing accusations it was not the most popular of his albums, i like to call it his "lost" album. The music on the album is also refreshinly different to the tracks he had produced before but still had the elements to a perfect Michael Jackson track.
The album although moving into a different direction, doesn't necessarily move in any specific direction, the styles of song are quite varied, from the rock style of 'Give in to me' to the harmonious sound of 'Will you be there'
As you can see below it is so far the longest of Michael's albums with tracks that not only produced to talk about women or cars like todays generic musical styles but talks about issues that need to be dealt with, for example both "Heal the World" and "Keep the Faith" are very moving.
1. Jam 2. Why you wanna trip on me 3. In the closet 4. She drives me wild 5. Remember
the time 6. Can't let her get away 7. Heal the world 8. Black or white 9. Who is it 10. Give in to me 11. Will you be there 12. Keep the faith 13. Gone too soon 14. Dangerous
'Dangerous' is fourteen tracks long which brings the total play time to 1:16:59. There is no bonus material on the special edition, though, breaking the trend followed by the other special edition albums.
'Jam' starts thing off with a bang, or a broken window to be precise. This song really is just about dancing or 'jamming', and includes a rap performed by Heavy D. Great song to be seen in concert and it's a nice start to the album and something to get you moving, you really do just want to dance with this one.
'Why you wanna trip on me' is the first song to face up to something, in this case, the media circus that constantly mobs Jackson. Jackson basically asks 'Why you wanna trip on me' when there are much bigger problems in the world, world hunger being one of the points he raises. Kicking in with a short guitar solo this is definitely a good song that raises some fair points whilst still being enjoyable to listen to.
'In the closet' is seen as one of Jackson's more sexy songs, featuring spoken verses by Princess Stephanie of Monaco, some could be seen as suggestive, this just contributes to the song being one of his 'sexier songs'. Although apart from that it is quite a rhythmic song, starting with a piano playing something that would sound rather classical.
'She drives me wild' begins with car sound effects, then Jackson's voice takes over and blends everything together, both the songs beat and other sound effects. This song definitely reflects the era that 'Dangerous' was released in.
'Remember the time' is basically a love song that shows a hint of R&B. This song shows off Jackson's amazing vocal talents. It manages not to get too slow and soppy whilst still being a great love song with a good set of lyrics, this song does not fail to impress.
'Can't let her get away' is another good upbeat song (most of the album is upbeat) that is more of a hip hop song with a nice beat. A song that set's a trend followed in to the early 00's by various hip hop and soul artists.
'Heal the world' is a great song. A relaxing song that takes a break from the albums so far upbeat nature. It delivers a genuine message in the form of a public awareness song I suppose. Very soothing up until when the choir is introduced, where it is still rather soothing but sounds more gospel. This song will either make you feel maybe a little guilty, or feel good.
'Black or white' is probably the most recognised song off the whole album. In this song Jackson looks racism right in the eyes and basically says that it doesn't matter what colour your skin is. This song sounds a bit funky and soul like, but also kind of like a rock and roll song. A catchy headbanger of a song.
'Who is it' It starts with opera style vocals, but as soon as the bass line kicks in, the song immediately becomes mysterious and a little sinister. The way Jackson has written this song really shows off his talents as a song writer, as the song builds up as it goes on. This song is sung with such emotion you can easily recognise the pain within it. This really is one Jackson's best songs, this masterpiece doesn't have nearly as much recognition as it deserves.
'Give in to me' is a rock song that comes somewhere near heavy metal, but I don't think achieves being heavy metal. Slash is on guitars yet again, and performs an excellent solo, which just hardens this song, the song overall having a definite edge. This strikes some resemblance to 'Dirty Diana' from Jackson's previous album 'Bad'.
'Will you be there' starts off like a classical piece of music found in an opera, but then the piano kicks in after almost two minutes which is shortly followed by a choir, and finally Jackson enters with his amazing voice. The song has a beat that stands alone on this album; I suppose I could call this a song that makes you feel good.
'Keep the faith' is almost like the brother of 'Will you be there' in the fact that it is a feel good song, even more so than 'Will you be there'. It is basically a funky ballad that is telling you to believe in yourself and you can do anything. With a nice little choir towards the end, this song is very convincing.
'Gone too soon' is dedicated to Ryan White, who caught AIDS as a child and died at the age of nineteen. The song is very simple and sad; basically it's about losing someone close like a friend. Try to find the performance Michael did of this to the clinton's, very moving.
'Dangerous' brings along another hip hop style beat. The verses are quietly spoken, yet the chorus is sung with plenty of power.
I feel that 'Dangerous' is one of Jackson's best albums and could easily stand up to such previous albums such as 'Thriller' and 'Bad'. Jackson has managed to pull off his range of new styles perfectly. It is definitely worth the purchase. Everyone should own this album.
The competition at the time of the album consited of mainly pop-boy bands like "New Kids on the Block" almost a waste of space kind of people in the music industry. There is no doubt that Michael continued to dominate the music industry. But with what i believe to be false alligations began his fall which i hope will be redeemed.
A really outlandish cover and design, with many different pictures and desgins covering it. Its strange yes, but its nice, very eye catching anyway, easy to find when you go and buy it after this review!
I recommend people who are either not a fan of Michael Jackson or who want to be but are worried because of his bad press to pick up the albums from play.com as they do very good deals on double albums, i believe this once is paired with "Blood on the Dancefloor".
In conclusion, i would like to say that Michael Jackson's album "Dangerous" should not be something that remains in the high street store under "Peadophile" or "Pervert". It should be flaunted as "Genious" and "Unforgettable". Forget his bad press, understand why I feel so passionately enough to write this review. Pick up his music you will be pleasantly surprised!
