~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Daniel Powter - Daniel Powter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Born in 1971, Daniel grew up in a place called Okanagan in British Colombia, He had always known he would do something with music…never being into sports like his friends. He learnt to play violin instead, which gave kids an excuse to tease him, which along with being dyslexic didn't make school life easy or a very happy time for him!
2 things happened to make him want to break free from it all, firstly his violin teacher pointed out to him that he was reading his music sheets upside down (not taking into account his dyslexia) secondly getting a black eye from another kid at school…….He eventually managed to break away from it all.
He moved to Vancouver, Canada when he was 20yrs old and met producer Jeff Dawson, and spent the next year writing the songs for his debut album……..
His debut single from that album was Bad Day when released in mid 2005 and got to number 2 in the singles charts and stayed in the top ten for 13 weeks!
~~~~~~~~~ The Album ~~~~~~~~~
This is an album which is mainly piano driven adult pop, it has echoes of soft rock acts such as Coldplay and Maroon 5.
Track list
1} Song 6 ~~~~~~~~~ ***I
have no idea why this is called song 6 when it is the 1st song on the album…..You may not recognise this rather falsetto sound as being Daniel, at the beginning, A quite upbeat song, I like this.
So let's lie in the sun You didn't want the world to know But I'm not strong and you'll find out And you get the rock 'n' roll
2} Free Loop ~~~~~~~~~~~ ***This song starts off as rather a mellow track, but it eases gently into a very catchy tune, as I think all of his songs do!
Cause it's hard for me to lose In my life I've found only time will tell And I will figure out that we can baby We can do a one night stand, yeah
3} Bad Day ~~~~~~~~~ ***Perhaps his best known track so far, This was released around the same time as James Blunt's You're Beautiful so was sadly overlooked by many, This is my favourite track on the album, It has a very catchy tune and the lyrics are lovely too. It's a song everyone who's ever had a bad day can relate to!
Where is the moment we needed the most You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost They tell me your blue skies fade to grey They tell me your passion's gone away And I don't need no carryin' on
4} Suspect ~~~~~~~~~ ***This doesn't sound anything like the rest of the songs at all, it has more of a rock feel to it, Daniel sounds a bit redneck in this, It does make a nice change from the other songs and breaks the album up a bit for me, I didn't like this track to begin with but it is one which really grows on you.
Tonight, I'll walk Sit down and let me know my rights Tell about, tell about someone else I know it, I know it This time is suspect there are I talk and give me you the time
5} Lie To Me ~~~~~~~~~~~ ***Again the falsetto sound comes into this track, He does this so well, and it suits the track too.
She said, Tell me once again why would you lie to me. She said do me like you should why would you try for me. From all the girls I knew where would you rather be. Because I've got everything you want. Take me back to yours cause that's the best I want
6} Jimmy Gets High ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** This is a lovely ballad type song, A beautiful tune, song and this another of my favourites on the album. Great if you like ballads.
Jimmy you lied, I'm hoping that soon maybe life it don't pass you by So Jimmy gets high tonight And Jimmy you know, everybody hates you when you're living off your rock 'n roll So you get high tonight
7} Styrofoam ~~~~~~~~~~~ ***I think in this song he is singing about how he leads an ordinary life as much as the next person, A slower more mellow songs than the rest.
I paid bills and paid them more Isn't this an ordinary song? Styrofoam
8} Hollywood ~~~~~~~~~~~~ ***I'm not sure whether I like this song very much? It certainly has good lyrics but the tune isn't all that catchy and not sure about the style of the song at all…. It seems a bit showtuney. There is a short piano solo in the middle though which is quite nice.
And you are cross the dancefloor Let me buy you a drink or two And you could be my star for weekends Do you like your Hollywood? As far as I'm concerned, the lesson's been learned At least that's what I understood
9} Lost On The Stoop ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ***This is a track which reminds me a little of James Blunt's style, but it still has that Daniel Powter feel to it, if that makes sense? He has a very distinct falsetto sound to his voice which doesn't always come out in all of the songs, and even in this one it only comes into it a few times!
Shed off and peal I'm in no shape or form You're just a reject coming down for more When two are receiven, you know I could be there Soon you're laughing, soon you're laughing my way
10} Give Me Life ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ***This has the feel of a Macy Gray track to it somehow, I think it's Daniel's voice! A very easy listening track.
Right directions, a problem with your friends understand my point of view and I´m not bothered I break before I bend give me life, give me life, for what I do.
~~~~~~~~~~ My opinion ~~~~~~~~~~ This is one of the few albums I can actually sit and listen to all the way through as each song sounds so different and sometimes it even feels like someone else is actually singing, except you soon recognise his distinct voice, My favourite tracks on the album are Bad Day and Jimmy Gets High! The album lasts for around 36 minutes
Available from play.com £8.99 Amazon from £4.83 Ebay Auctions starting from about 99p
I highly recommend this album to anyone who likes Coldplay, James Blunt, and such like!
