that follows the story of a street-fighter who has spent his life being cruelly treated as a dog. Since the music is a system of the entire film, very little is structured as one might expect a complete song to be. There are moments of classic Massive Attack such as "Collar Stays On" and "Polaroid Girl" where downbeat, trip-hop drums are laid over the band's characteristic grooves, but this is not a typical artist album. However, despite for the most part being accompaniment, songs like "One Thought at a Time" and "I Am Home", stand out for their structure, the former having a great, sixties psychedelic guitar-sounding hook. Another highlight is "Two Rocks an a Cup of Water", an emotional piece voiced on plucked strings, bell-shaped waves and piano, best described as Boards of Canada in an easy listening mood. Danny the Dog should not be treated as the latest album by Massive Attack for without the moving image it seems in-complete but it does contain some beautiful pieces of atmospheric music that should serve the film very well indeed. --David Trueman

Danny the Dog - Massive Attack
The original soundtrack for the film Unleashed (previously called Danny the Dog) starring Jet Li and Bob Hoskins directed by Louis Leterrier. Also stars Morgan Freeman.
The film follows Danny (Jet Li) who's been treated like a dog since he was taken from his mother when he was child by Uncle Bart (Bob Hoskins), a ruthless Loan Shark. He's thrown into a Fight-club style inviroment and forced to kill at his masters command. Danny escapes and is pursued by his master who tries to reclaim him.
Massive Attack produced the entire music for the film and is not just a compilation of songs. The album takes you on a journey throughout the film and typical of Massive Attack, they can pack a real punch when they need to.
The tracks are quite short but beautifully produced. They have a real Massive Attack feel to them but without sounding like any of their other albums. Some are quite haunting, some are quite punk-filled and some are just plain tremendous.
The Dog Obeys (track 18) is an awesome track with some pounding bass. I am Home (track 20) is also good with a rocking beat reminiscent of the Blue Lines album.
It's a shame the film didn't do so well at the cinema, maybe this soundtrack would be better known. It's a really good soundtrack compared to most and I'd definately reccomend it. However, I'd advise that you watch the film first.
Negatives - It's not the best release by Massive Attack to be honest, there's no vocals on the sound track and it mostly is background music trying to tell a story.

Album Notes
Massive Attack's brooding, atmospheric trip-hop has always had a cinematic quality, so it is no surprise they were tapped by director Louis Leterrier to compose the score for his film DANNY THE DOG. The soundtrack is strictly instrumental, and while longtime fans may miss the group's vocals, the variety and depth of the music more than compensates for this. Unlike the of-a-piece mood of albums like MEZZANINE, DANNY THE DOG is a varied stylistic collage that references techno, industrial, dub, ambient, and film music. Cuts like the piano-and-strings duet on "You've Never Had a Dream" or the pulsing, eerie "Opening Title" are sweeping and evocative, perfectly suited to accompanying images on the big screen. The mood veers from delicate and melancholic (the music-box melody of "Two Rocks and a Cup of Water") to aggressive and mesmerizing ("The Dog Obeys," the skittery house rhythms in "Atta Boy"). The musical palette is so broad here, in fact, there is little that recalls the band's earliest work (except perhaps the deep, floating groove of "Polaroid Girl"). DANNY THE DOG may be Massive Attack's most ambitious and intriguing effort, in its dynamic range, coloring, and compelling blend of electronica and film music.
Album Reviews
Mojo (p.98) - 3 stars out of 5 - "DANNY THE DOG strays across a range of styles: minimal piano-and-drone sequences reminiscent of early '80s Eno, sentimental string sections, grungy acid break-beats and intense, claustrophobic interludes..."
Uncut (p.124) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Obsessives will find much meaning herein..."
CMJ (p.5) - "Massive Attack has developed a much darker, apocalyptic feel to its soundscapes, yet these icy tracks are more dramatic than they are downers."

On the limmited edition it has all the music videos on it as well! An excellent touch I think!
The cover is the only downside that I have found, it looks nice now but after time it's going to be a bit scruffy as it's made like a hard back book with no plastic covering. (*)
