Dark Days Indeed

Advantages: An amazing insight into incredible lives
Disadvantages: Depressing reminder of how bleak life can be

"NO CRACK HERE" Trying to avoid something so entwined in homeless culture seems a futile pursuit when you live rough beneath the streets of Manhattan. But futility is a theme that runs throughout Dark Days, a docu-film by British born Marc Singer. The message is being daubed by Ralph, a Puerto Rican ex-addict who had been clean for some time. This time he isn't going back, he pauses to tell the camera, through the telltale drawl brought on by years of abuse. As he paints and re-paints the words on his front door, it seems debateable whether this is for the benefit of others or a reaffirmation of his own will to stay clean. Yes, I said front door. Ralph is a member of an underground community that has built a home and a life in the murk and filth of the New York subway system. When he started filming, I doubt Singer imagined ...

Functional Felix

Advantages: Cheap, functional, and close to the city centre.
Disadvantages: Not for the person wanting luxury.

For my second visit to Poland after Krakow last year we had the pleasure of staying in what I would conclude as another much underestimated hotel in Poland. Star ratings for hotels in Poland seem to be a far removed reflection of what we in Britain measure as a good hotel. The Felix hotel, rated as two stars on internet and relevant literature references such as the well known Expedia, is in my opinion as a quite experienced European city traveller, way above the standard of two stars for what we consider here. As a quick comparison we stayed in a three star hotel in Italy in the same week and that hotel did not compare at all with the Felix in any of the required formats for my own rating of hotels. The Felix was far superior. The Felix is not in the city centre but is close enough (ten minutes maximum by tram) to reach, and just ...

Review of Felix Hotel, Warsaw

Voracious vampires and dark dismal days

Advantages: Hartnett's performance is good, lots of gore
Disadvantages: Melissa George is annoying, generally story quite dull

Sheriff Eben Oleson and some of the inhabitants of an isolated Alaskan town are preparing for the thirty days of night that comes around each year. His estranged wife, Stella, is preparing to leave the town for the period without sunlight, and others have the same idea. Then Stella is prevented from leaving after a car crash...and soon begins to wish she wasn't still there when strange things begin to happen. It is soon clear that the town is overrun by vampires, who are killing inhabitants faster than they can be rescued. Along with a few survivors, Eben and Stella prepare to hide themselves away until the next sunrise. But will they be able to stay alive without being bitten, starving or freezing to death? Vampires are a little off my radar really; I enjoyed Bram Stoker's Dracula, but generally prefer my horror films to have ...
