Nightwish more or less perfected the female fronted Symphonic metal sound throughout the late 90s and beginning of this millenium culminating in the commercialy uber-succesful album Once in 2004 which reached no.1 in the album charts in the majority of Europe (somehow only got to no.102 in the UK..), from that moment on it was bound to take something awesome to beat what they had done. Whilst a lot of praise has to go to the quality of the musicians, a lot of the band's sound came from the enormous range of vocalist Tarja Turunen.
Dark Passion Play was the first album without her, there had been a 3 year break and everyone was wondering how Swedish vocalist Anette Oldon would fair. By this time Nightwish had already started to become incredibly predictable and commercially everywhere that they were beginning to get on my nerves.
This album was the chance to redeem themselves by creating something new with the new line-up, it seemed to me though that the album was a poor version of some of their older work with little new forcing it's way into the fray. I've basically given up on the band due to this album, Once was commercial and predictable but still very good, this has the same heavy songs to ballad ratios and there are no unexpected twists yet it's lacking something and simply isn't as good as Once. Dark Passion Play is for me, not only commercial but poor too!

Advantages: Awesome songs, Well fitted! Disadvantages: Possibly songs are too short.
I was always curious before Nightwish came back together with a new vocalist, would the new vocalist cut it or not? Well, it came out finally, after a long wait. The new vocalist, Annete Olzon, was completely different to Tarja Turunen! A refreshing change from opera. Anyway, lets review song by song.
1: The Poet and the Pendulum. 13:54
Such a symphonic start, gradually growing darker. That twinkling sound makes you uneasy, yet comfortable... Quite ... ...i love it anyway. The vocals in this are VERY good. Along with the lyrics, after this, Bang. In come the heavy drums, and the tune. I mean, wow. Drums get more frequent, and then hit in the guitars. Amazing work and songwriting. After this, it gets a little calmer, and in come annetes vocals. Completely different from the old nightwish, and her voice is heavenly. It REALLY grows on you. Then more instruments hit in, i don't know what they are, but ...

A must buy! Review ofDark Passion Play - Nightwishby
metal4ever
Advantages: The album! Disadvantages: none
This is quite possibly my favourite nightwish CD, and that is saying a lot.
When i first bought the CD i was a little uneasy, would the new singer be as good? would it still be the same nightwish? I had purposely avoided reading anything about the album until then because i wanted to make sure that i formed my own opinion. I needn't have worried. Anette Olzon is a wonderful replacement and the band is going from strength to strength. The album kicks ... ...poet and the pendulum, which is clearly the main track of the album. As soon as i heard the start of this track i knew i had nothing to fear, nightwish was alive! this song is absolutely epic and without a doubt the best song on the album.
The next song is bye bye beautiful, which is a fairly catchy tune, if a little childish as it is clearly about tarja. Amaranth is the next song and is again a very catchy tune, even people who generally don't ...

Advantages: Strong symphonic metal album Disadvantages: New singer as good?
Nightwish for me are a band who always deliver quality albums, this offering is no different.
Despite the change of lead female vocal the album still has the very definite nightwish sound. "Dark Passion Play" has all the symphonic sounds of previous albums and still delivers those crunching guitars you come to expect.
Now the big question is Annettes voice comparable to Tarja's. My answer no. But not necessarily a bad thing. I think Annette has ... ...not quite as strong or as operatic.
I saw the video from the first single off this album "Amaranth" and I must say she looked a little more like a pop singer than a metal singer though still undeniably a Nightwish song.
As for the album itself I think it carries on where "Once" left off. The male vocal is also used alot on this album. ...

I waited for this album with bated breath - would it still be nightwish without Tarja?
Happily, the answer is YES!!!
When a new nightwish album comes out I tend to listen to it quite a few times - just to get the feel for it - and there's usually a couple of duff tracks on it. No such thing with this album! All the way from the 14 minute "monstrosity" (a quote from Jukka) Poet and the Pendulum, through to the fantastic Sahara, this album just delivers ... ...new albums through is the "friend" test. And so far, even the metal hating friends have loved it.
Anette has delivered the impossible - the album was written without her in mind, and she's easily matched the distinctive Tarja, around who the previous albums have all been written.
So, what else can I tell you about the album? Well, as always, its a quality production - totally clear sound, fantasticly mixed and powerful all the way from the bass ...

Advantages: A great rocking album Disadvantages: New singer might not to be to everyones tastes
I am fairly new to the world of Nightwish but I have learned fast.
I love Nightwish and I love this album. Ok, new singer takes a little getting used to, but I feel she fills Tarja's shoes well. Annette is a great singer but has a different style to Tarja, takes a little getting used to but the underlying feel and emotion of the music remains the same.
I feel the second track on this album (bye bye beautiful) might be about the sacking of Tarja, ...

Advantages: fantastic return, outstanding album, love anette's voice Disadvantages: none I can think of
...First of all, I'll start by saying that I was totally stunned - this album is amazing...They've well and truly pulled off a spectacular record. Here's my attempt at a breakdown of the album "DarkPassionPlay" track-by-track:
1. The Poet and the Pendulum - WOW. No wonder Tuomas loves this one. It's stunning. Fantastic orchestrations, choir and crunchy guitars. I love how it's split into sections. Love the last part "Mother and Father". Sounds like something he's taken straight from his parents here. Is very moving. Is very Tuomas. ;)
2. Bye Bye Beautiful - Ho boy. Definitely seems to be about Tarja. I like it, despite the slightly pop-esque sounding title. Interesting chorus - the line "you chose the long road but we'll be waiting" - is this perhaps suggesting that they hold no grudge or animosity towards her now...

Their discography:
Angels Fall First (1997)
Oceanborn (1998)
Wishmaster (2000)
Over the Hills and Far Away (2001)
Century Child (2002)
Once (2004)
Once was to be the last album for Tarja, when she was 'dismissed' from the band by means of a public open letter in 2005. Nightwish have carried on since then, and although I like the new female singer she doesn't have that operatic edge that made Tarja (and therefore Nightwish) so unique.
Swedish vocalist Anette Olzon then joined the band and since then they have released the following album:
DarkPassionPlay (2007)
Oceanborn
The CD was released on October 7th 1998 for SpineFarm records. It was to be their second album, after Angels Fall First, and the first album that new member Sami worked on.
Oceanborn was a success for the band; the album placing...

Album Notes: 'Dark Passion Play' is the sixth album by Finnish metallers Nightwish. This is the first album with new vocalist Anette Olzen after the dismissal of original frontwoman Tarja Turunen. The band haven't lost any of their edge amidst personnel changes as the album confidently displays Nightwish's varied array of styles. From progessive symphonic metal to mournful dark ballads this is an album of epic intent. Features the singles 'Eva', 'Amaranth' and 'Bye Bye Beautiful'.
