This is quite possibly my favourite nightwish CD, and that is saying a lot. When i first bought the CD i was a little uneasy, would the new singer be as good? would it still be the same nightwish? I had purposely avoided reading anything about the album until then because i wanted to make sure that i formed my own opinion. I needn't have worried. Anette Olzon is a wonderful replacement and the band is going from strength to strength. The album kicks off with a haunting melody at the beginning of the poet and the pendulum, which is clearly the main track of the album. As soon as i heard the start of this track i knew i had nothing to fear, nightwish was alive! this song is absolutely epic and without a doubt the best song on the album. The next song is bye bye beautiful, which is a fairly catchy tune, if a little childish as it is clearly about tarja. Amaranth is the next song and is again a very catchy tune, even people who generally don't like this type of music have been caught singing along to this song! I think that this is the doing of the new singer, as her voice is much less operatic than tarjas was and therefore she appeals to a wider audience. Cadence of her last breath is probably my second favourite song on the album, and this song returns to the more haunting lyrics and melodies that nightwish are known for. Other great songs on this album include 'the islander', in which marco really shows off his vocal talents and 'seven days to the wolves', which is a heavier song that is great for headbanging! Overall, this album is a must buy!
