Everybody has heard how Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' (DSotM) is one of the best albums that has ever been recorded, and this is one of the few cases I feel the accolade is genuinely deserved.
Until a few months ago, I was one of those people who hated Pink Floyd, claiming that while they and their fans said they were being 'experimental' or 'progressive', they were actually just boring, pretentious, and writing music purely to show off how good they are at guitar. Eventually I decided to give them another go, and acquired this album cheaply. From that moment I've never looked back.
There's nothing pretentious about this whatsoever, it's a set of fantastic songs, all of which link together superbly, and is one of the small number of albums I could listen to at any time at all and still enjoy it no matter what my mood.
From the opening 'Speak to Me' this album draws you in, and when the beginning instrumental fades into 'Breathe' the true quality is evident. Throughout the album a variety of styles are present, from simple guitar work taking the forefront of songs such as 'Breathe' to the incredible sounds of the synthesizer in 'On the Run'. Even alarm clocks are used as an instrument.
The lyrics on their own don't seem to be noteworthy, but heard in context with the music they seem perfect.
I believe that everybody should own this album, whether a Pink Floyd fan or not, as it's almost completely flawless. Even the artwork has become one of the most instantly recognisable, iconic, images in music, as so many PF album covers are.
