My first review for over a month comes in the form of a fat guy, singing like a man gone wild, on a mean bike. Oh, did I mention he's also quite the comedian.
Meat Loaf (aka Michael Lee Aday) is one of those familiar names that almost everybody recognises, even if they don't know why. The guy has done several thousand films (well, alright, about 43 (in 18 of them, he played himself)), several million famous songs (again, I'm lying, although this figure can't be far off! ;-D) and a load of great albums (wow, I finally told the truth!).
This album is almost as definitive as the Bat Out of Hell album, as far as Meat Loaf albums are concerned.
THE TRACKS
1 - Peel Out - This song starts off with the infamous Harley engine, revving in the background and quickly steps into a great guitar riff. Powerful drums are all present, along with Meat Loaf's powerful vocals. Great musical work on this track; a track that defines Jim Steinman's song writing style. - 9/10
2 - I'm Gonna Love Her for the Both of Us - Starting off with some low-pitched piano work, this quickly becomes one of those ballads that only Meat Loaf can do. The song gradually builds up as it progresses, but isn't heavy. Again, the Steinman (or even, "Steinmaster") has done his stuff well. - 8/10
3 - More than You Deserve - Another piano intro. This song is a lot slower than the past two, but is beautiful. The piano blends with Meat Loaf's voice to give us a memorable duet, while the lyrics keep the song sad yet wonderful. One of his best ever ballads, in my opinion. - 9/10
4 - I'll Kill You If You Don't Come Back - The tempo is raised for this rock song. A guitar starts the song off, with another joining in soon after. The ever familiar backing-vocalists join Meat Loaf for this interesting song. Nothing spectacular, but certainly good. - 7/10
5 - Read 'Em and Weep - Another piano on another slow song which is another memorable ballad. Great vocals are the main point to focus on, while the odd guitar and piano bring the song to a sense of completion. - 8/10
6 - Nocturnal Pleasure - Not sure why I'm reviewing this track. It's just a talking track that lasts for a little over one minute. Quite strange.
7 - Dead Ringer for Love - Probably the most famous track from this album, a highly energetic song that sounds very Meat Loaf-ish. Great guitars, and good piano work are present, but the best part of the song is the singing between Meat Loaf and Cher, whose voices seem to merge together in a beautiful way. Kudos to the drummer too - he must have a skyscraper of a blood-sugar level!
8 - Everything is Permitted - It's the piano again. Meat Loaf really reduces the tempo with everything now. Calmer vocals bring the album to a close as this slow song progresses. A great album finisher. - 9/10
OTHER COMMENTS
The cover of the album is one of the most original I've seen, as it always tends to be with Meat Loaf albums. I've posted a scan of it with this review.
OVERALL
This is a must have for all Meat Loaf fans. A truly great album and more than capable to standing up to it's predecessor (and Meat Loaf's first album), Bat Out of Hell. My advice is that you buy this as soon as you can, as it's well worth the price.

I might chucked out of the 'Theatrical Rock Appreciation Society' for saying this: I prefer this album to Bat Out Of Hell. There, I said it! I feel better now. D.
Advantages: A classic album that stands tall alongside Meat Loaf's other releases Disadvantages: For most it merely stands in the shadows trying to mimic Bat Out of Hell
