consider themselves the godfathers of hardcore. And Dead Yuppies, their 10th album (and third for Epitaph), sees them at their raging, relentless, wholly simplistic best. While other punk bands have embraced rap, industrial and metal, AF have stayed true to the New York sound of the mid to late-70s. Vinnie Stigma's riffs, like the Ramones', are short, sharp, utterly to-the-point, and occasionally interrupted by a howling Johnny Thunders-style solo. Roger Miret's vocals are rough and snotty, recalling Stiv Bators of the Dead Boys (formed in Cleveland, sure, but quick to relocate to the Big Apple). Song titles such as "Politician", "Pedophile" and "Dead Yuppies" are clear indicators of the band's raison d'etre. They rail against injustice in general, and corrupt powerbrokers in particular. And, like so many punks, they snipe at those who ignore "proper" music ("Club Girl"), while revelling in their own unpopularity ("Love to be Hated"). Above all, they loudly espouse personal freedom, openly demanding liberty or death (though who actually makes that decision is anyone's guess). Agnostic Front are survivors, gaining strength from their refusal to change. If you don't like them already, you probably never will. --Dominic Wills

Advantages: Punk roots still hold their own. Disadvantages: Lacks any kind of originality or self-worth.
The most recent album from New York hardcore punks AgnosticFront continues to mix angry punk rock with shouty hardcore, and as but one of a seemingly endless number of similar-sounding albums having been released every year for the last couple of decades, it brings nothing new to the scene apart from some new material of AgnosticFront sounding like themselves. The whole album is based on fast, riff-heavy songs with multiple, moshable 'breakdowns' as a substitution for musical diversity, backed by relentless double bass drums in a clicking frenzy that again permits the drummer to avoid having to put any thought into what he's doing. But of course, this is still punk first and foremost; a genre that has no delusions of Rimsky-Korsakov.
All the same, I found 'Warriors' to be a largely disappointing, or at best entirely bland experience ...
Advantages: A great read! Disadvantages: A little short!
THE FRONT
MANDASUE HELLER
INTRODUCTION
?The Front?, was the first novel from Mandasue Heller and was published in 2002.
Ms Heller moved to Manchester in 1982. She spent ten years living in a notorious rough area of the city, working as a singer in bands playing on the local pubs and clubs circuit. After a vicious attack on her home she decided to try to fulfil her ambition of becoming a writer.
She had always enjoyed reading crime novels so she wrote about what she knew, about life on the rough estates of Manchester.
Mandasue Heller is billed as being very much like Martina Cole, and I do agree with this comment.
THE STORY
?The Front? starts with Mal, Ged, Sam and Lee, four old friends, who have decided to make some easy money by robbing their local supermarket, on a Manchester estate ...
Advantages: Well written, tense, black humour, make up and effects, Davina McCall(!) Disadvantages: Violent and very gory, a little padded in places
Before reading:
1. Contains several plot spoilers. But you can probably guess what happens at the end anyway.
2. Assumes a basic knowledge of the Big Brother TV show and format.
3. Parts of Dead Set are pretty gruesome, so if you?re of a nervous disposition you may not even want to read the rest of this review, never mind follow any of the links at the end.
Not Ideal Boyfriend Material
How?s this for a nightmare scenario? You?re a lowly female member of the production team on Big Brother. No no, that?s not it. There?s more. Not long ago you were engaged in a passionate clinch with Danny, your new almost-boyfriend, for whom you?re in the process of trading in your long-standing but boring current model. Danny has now left the room on an errand for your mutual tyrant of a boss and while he?s gone ...
