one of my friends opened the gates to metal and hard rock with metallica. for who the bells toll was the first song i heard off of their cds and i finally realised that metal was what had been missing from my life. i went out to a music store looking for metallica cds. at this point i had no idea what cds were better than others so i ended up buying the first one i saw, which happened to be LOAD. although not anywhere near their best work the songs off of my new cd were played on my computer throughout the day and on my discman during car rides and while going to bed. i enjoyed most of their music, but thats until they released an album that just made me angry (hint?). st. anger was definitely disappointing. no rediculous breakdowns. nothing too catchy. and where the hell did the solos go?
i waited for the release of death magnetic since the day i heard st. anger. in my mind i believed that metallica couldn't come up with anything worse than st. anger. luckily i was right. eventhough death magnetic is definitely better than the previous album, can it be considered as a true 'metallica' cd?
self plagarism. that's what comes to mind when you listen to metallica's new album.
the day that never comes = fade to black & one
that was just your life & cyanide = blackened
metallica's older music had non repetative riffs throughout their 7-8 minute long songs, whereas death magnetic offers nothing but traditional riffs that pretty much repeat on end. the song structures are definitely a lot less complex compared to what they used to be. most songs on death magnetic last more than 7 minutes, but all they have is a simple 'verse/chorus/verse' pattern instead of the 'long intro/heavy jam/verse/even heavier jam/chorus/bridge/insane solo/outro'.
metallica probably wanted to sound 'raw' again like the good ol' days. all that came out was a polished album, although pretty tough sounding.
so why doesn't metallica sound as awesome as they used to? well i guess when they first started off, they were a bunch of teenage kids with no money and a crappy life. they had some intense problems and issues to take care of so all that emotion went into their music. but now they're a bunch of nearly-50-year-olds who live in huge houses, have families, roll around in the crap load of money they've made so far. what could they possibly be worried about? they just don't have the dedication and the emotions that made their music what it was.
where to now?
"In November 2008, Metallica came to the end of their record deal with Warner Bros., the band is considering their options for the future and according to drummer Lars Ulrich, one of their options is to release their next album through the internet." - Wikipedia
lets hope they don't follow through, decide to chill with their kids & homies and don't further destroy their reputation in the music world.

As many of their early fans would agree, Danish-Californian quartet Metallica seemed to ... more

Advantages: Kirk's Solos back, songs more varied and better than St Anger, a couple of epics. Disadvantages: Not as good as some over-the-top reviewers have said.
Advantages: Music getting back to the roots of metallica, when they were at their best Disadvantages: Vocals and mix of the album too modernised, just doesnt have that rawness.
Advantages: Thundering riffs, great basslines, howling Hetfield, mental solos, brutal drumming Disadvantages: Still not as good as the old Metallica albums, Unforgiven is a bit odd

Review of Death Magnetic - Metallica
Advantages: Metallica are back, fantastic partly-thrashing progressive riff based metal music with a contemporary touch Disadvantages: Awful mixing has destroyed dynamics adding severe digital distortion with too much compression used
