Advantages: Original, an 18 min NoFX song! Disadvantages: none
I was bought this CD by a friend of mine for my birthday last year, knowing that my friend didnt really like punk the guy behind the counter at the record store questioned her asking "you know this is like proper decent punk dont you?" and he wasnt wrong! On first putting the EP into my cd player i was puzzled by it only having a single track...no way i thought, what is this? After a moments pause however I pressed the play button and settled down ... ...a minute I realised I had stumbled upon a CD of greatness
..the minutes tick by and still Fat Mike, Melvin, El Hefe and co. still havent stopped, the song keeps on going, flowing between what can only be described as movements (as in classical music) as the song progresses, some fast some slower, each and every one as thought out and tightly played as the last. NoFx: El Hefe; Fat Mike; Eric Melvin; Herb Reath Stinks. Additional personnel: Lars Nylander (trombone); Spike (background vocals). Recorded at Motor Studios, San Francisco, California, June 1999. For a band whose members are known for not taking themselves too seriously, THE DECLINE is a serious affair. If such a genre exists, "progressive punk" would be the best way to describe the single, 18-plus-minute track that makes up this EP. There are drastic lyrical shifts in THE DECLINE. Cynical tongue-in-cheek prose gives way to warnings concerning the glorification of violence. What follows is a diatribe covering the hypocrisy of the judicial system, the mind-numbing effects of television, and the loss of integrity. The conceptual thread that seems to connect it all is a general apathy in the collective consciousness of America, as Fat Mike sings, "The going gets tough / the tough get debt / don't pay attention / pay the rent / our next of kins pays for your sins." NOFX has delivered its rallying cry for independent thought, and it is THE DECLINE.
