salvo of rakish Mancunian rock 'n' roll egotism usher in the era of "laddism", the shock waves of which still reverberate around town centres in the form of Saturday night yob culture? Was this Britain's victorious reclaiming of the rock band throne, the crown having been stolen in a coup (arguably for the first time since Elvis Presley) by Yankee grunge imposters? Or were Oasis just second-hand Sex Pistols with a twist of Lennon? Six enthralling DVD hours later--promo videos, footage from Top Of The Pops, Naked City, multitudinous live venues etc and heaps of extended foul-mouthed chit-chat with shrewd label managers, cocky band members, loopy mates and Burt Bacharach--and the viewer may not reach any discernable conclusion. However, one's thinking cap is well and truly stretched in an exhaustively entertaining manner. Rich in anecdote--a nocturnal meeting with a spaced-out member of the Stone Roses on a tractor in Wales, ferrying bass amps across the River Fowey in Cornwall on a speed boat,Tony Carroll's "crap" drumming, Digsy's lasagne--and bulging with barnstorming rock tunes about roll-ups, booze, dole queues, fame and flatulent canines, Definitely Maybe the DVD definitely does the job. And snapper-decking singer Liam Gallagher? A twit sometimes but you have to admire anyone who can make a tambourine look like an offensive weapon. --Kevin Maidment

So you tell me you haven’t heard of Oasis, well in all honesty I’d probably turn round and be 95% certain that if I called you a liar I wouldn’t be wrong. However for that 5% that may not have heard of Noel, Liam et all they are from Manchester where during the mid 90’s they emerged to become one of the biggest bands of recent times. Having grown up on the council estates of Manchester Noel had taught himself to play guitar and mixed with an extraordinary talent for writing lyrics he got his brother and a few mates together and formed a band.
This album was Oasis at their finest though and the opening track really summed up the way the band sounded at the time. “Rock And Roll Star” is probably one of the tracks that actually got me into Oasis in the first place. From the first bars of the guitar intro you can tell it’s going to be a brilliant track. After only a matter of seconds the drums come in to provide the backing beat really keeping the pace going. The first taste of Liam’s lyrics really sums up the sound of this album. The lyrics as well are rather apt and at the time they weren’t expecting the success they got it. Really with a simple mixture of drums and guitars it may not be technically superb but the result is fantastic and a track that I always enjoy hearing.
“I live my life for the stars that shine People say it's just a waste of time When they said I should feed my head That to me was just a day in bed”
Next up comes “Shakermaker” a quality track that really calms the album down after the opener. It opens slowly with the guitars and a small quiet drum beat in the background before it really starts to get going. The drums get a bit louder and the guitars take a bit of a back seat only really using a couple of notes after the introduction of Liam’s vocals. Although he’s not an amazing singer Liam does a great job on this album and although I do generally prefer the tracks Noel sings I think Liam’s distinct style really makes Oasis. When the vocals stop and the guitars really get there chance to shine. Although maybe not lyrically the best track on the album and quite possibly the weakest it is still good.
One of my favourite tracks on the album has to be “Live Forever”. Again it opens with a drumbeat but this time its much louder and more prominent. The guitar this time is there but quiet and as the vocals come in the drum carries on this simple beat to the chorus where the bass joins in and everything really starts to sound fantastic. Again technically it’s not the most technical track you will ever hear but the way Noel has written the tracks and the way they are put together makes them sound fantastic. Again there is a chance or an instrumental section where the guitars again sound amazing and really make a difference on the song. Lyrically the track is superb and a real testament to Noel’s writing ability.
The pace really picks back up again with “Up In The Sky”. This is another of those tracks that really make this album what it is both lyrically and musically. The guitars open it up straight away, no long winding up intro but instead in with the main songs tune straight away. The drums join in shortly after adding a good beat to the track before the vocals come in. Again musically it is rather simple but the way the drums and guitars really compliment each other make the tracks easy to listen to and enjoy. The lyrics are a little mad but I’m sure it’s almost a certainty that Noel was on some sort of Drug at the time of writing.
An odd start for the beginning of “Columbia”. A distorted guitar mixed with a solid but simple drum beat while the guitars really start to build up along with a slight variation to the drums. When the vocals come in its quite possibly one of the best tracks with Liam’s vocals on it. The lyrics again are superb and there’s time when you can actually feel them getting inside your head and making you think about what exactly it is that Noel has written about here. The drums stay the same pretty much all the way through the track, varying slightly but staying simple while complimenting the guitars perfectly. Overall it’s a superb track that’s easy to listen to and very enjoyable.
“What I heard is not what I hear I can see the signs but they're not very clear”
Another favourite of mine is “Supersonic”, but to be honest apart from “Shakermaker” I do like every track on the album. From the opening bars of the track you can tell its going to be a good one. A solid drum start that carries on throughout the track. The introduction of the guitars and vocals really mould themselves around this beat, which quickly becomes the real backbone of the track. Liam’s voice sounds great on this track and the lyrics fit nicely into not just the sound of the track but also the style of vocals that Liam more commonly adopts. Some brilliant lines used during the track and the overall outcome is a track that’s a joy to listen to.
Another quicker track on the album is “Bring It On Down”. It starts again with a distortion of the guitars before the drums really kick in and then the Bass and guitars really start to make the song come alive. However it’s when Liam comes in with the vocals that the song really starts to sound like something brilliant. Although again not technically the best track there is a rawness to this album that really makes it appeal, no over production just pure music, which is ultimately something bands lose over time. The speed of the track carries on all the way through without much variation in the musical aspect at all but it’s this simplicity that makes it stand out.
Another classic Oasis track has to be “Cigarettes and Alcohol”. It’s instantly recognizable from the opening bars of the track before you even get to the lyrics. The drums count it in before the guitar takes over and then finally the drums join back in to really get it under way. When I was talking about the rawer sound to the tracks this one is a perfect example. There’s no smooth touched up recording and what you get is the sound of the track as it would be played. The lyrics again are fantastic and Liam’s vocals as I’ve said once before really aren’t amazing but they really suit the type of tracks the band produce.
Although I am a fan of the album on the whole there is one track above all the others that has always stood out for me. I think it’s more to do with the easy going appeal of “Digsy’s Dinner” more than anything else but its another of those tracks I could listen to over and over again. An easy going guitar intro kicks us off on this one, pretty fast paced whilst accompanied perfectly by the drums before the vocals finally come in. Liam’s vocals do actually sound superb on this track complimenting the lyrics well and in turn the drums and guitars really sound fantastic.
“I'll pick you up at half past three We'll have lasagne I'll treat you like a Queen I'll give you strawberries and cream”
With only 2 tracks to go we come to the sublime “Slide Away”, one of those songs that when your having a rough day is ideal listening. The slow introduction lead on the whole by the guitars picks up a little when the drums come in to provide it with a good backing. Then the vocals come in once the rhythm is established and the relationship between the music and the vocals is almost seamless. Liam brings the vocals to life in what can only be described as one of the most thought provoking tracks Oasis have done. By that I don’t mean about the lyrics but about things in general. This really is Oasis at their finest although thankfully they kept hold of the magic from this album to make the second.
The final track on the album “Married With Children” is a good way to finish up. The slow acoustic start really mellows out the album and finishes it on a lower but very relaxed note. Liam’s vocals accompanying the guitar sounds great and its ideal to play when you just want to relax and generally chill out. The lyrics are fairly simple but with Liam semi singing/talking it really does work very well. Although probably not to everyone’s taste but I just really like chill out tracks like this. The only problem with the track is that after it the album does end and really you just want to hear some more.
Although Oasis are one of those bands that people love or hate this is a superb album and as I mentioned I certainly feel it only misses out on being their best due to the sheer quality of “What’s The Story….”. A lot of people don’t bother with the band due to a dislike for the brothers Gallagher but I do feel that even if you don’t like their behaviour that sees them on the front of the paper you will enjoy this album. If you don’t already have a copy you can pick one up from amazon.co.uk for just £6.66.
Advantages: Some Great tracks, Grows on you. Disadvantages: Some naff tracks.
...Not a bad track but definitely not the best on the album.
Columbia with it’s psychedelic opener, that has you straining at first to hear it builds up into one of those tracks that is definitely Oasis and no mistaking it. Given it’s title and lyrics you wouldn’t be wrong in surmising that this was another track Mr Gallagher senior wrote whilst partaking in a few recreational drugs. I’ll hold my hand up and say that Columbia was the first track on ... ...it’s release many reviewers saw Definitely Maybe as a statement, pointing out to the world Oasis were a band to be reckoned with and weren’t going to go off into the sunset on the backs of the royalty to live in obscurity. Definitely Maybe is an excellent debut album with only a couple of weak tracks in my mind, whether it would have stood the course of time if they had not followed it up with perhaps their best album to date “What’s the Story…” ...

Advantages: A great debut album, great tracks Disadvantages: Lyrics lack depth but are thought provoking
Definitely Maybe was Oasis’ first album release back in 2004. It went straight in at number one in the British album charts and was the fastest selling debut album of all time and managed to sell 2.1 million copies in the UK and 7 million worldwide.
I never really liked Oasis when I first heard them, although I found they did grow on me and, just like many other people, after buying (What’s The Story) Morning Glory and thinking it was the best album ... ...about many other albums.
Definitely Maybe is a fantastic album and is worthy of anyone’s CD collection. At the time of writing this album can be bought for £4.98 (excluding P&P) from Amazon, which is a great bargain.

...of Oasis' finest, and is definitely up there with the best. "Supersonic" was another single which does get you going , but don't listen too closely to the words , they're not very good, but that never stopped Abba, though they were Swedish so they've got an excuse. Though I suppose that Oasis are mancs so they have an excuse as well.
"Cigarettes and Alcohol" was the other single from the album and is a decent enough rocker, but nothing special, ... ...only so much music you can plunder before you start repeating yourself and by their third album Oasis , like the football team they support, were no longer premier league material.
This however, along with their second album ,is definitely top drawer. Worth 8 quid of anybody's money. ...

Maybe the Best Album Ever!
I first listened to this many, many years and go and I still stick it in my CD player regularly. If my brother didn't tell me about Oasis I wouldn't be half the fan I am now. I have all there albums. All the members have now wrote a song for the band apart from the drummer Zak Starky. Yes, Ringo Starky son. He is better than the drummer who was around for this album. He wasn't good enough ...

...classic rock'n'roll band. Definitely Maybe then. It's the very first album put out by the rock'n'roll stars and you know it might possibly be the best, possibly. It captures a certain energy, a beautiful energy. 1- Rock'n'Roll Star is where the album kicks off, and in fact it says everything you need to know about Oasis and this album. In amongst all the "Britpop" crap was a raw and charged rock'n'roll band, hats off to them. Tonight I'm a rock'n'roll star screams the divinely coarse vocals of Liam the rock'n'roll star, backed up by a fast paced loose and just noisy track. The beat is actually surprisingly groovy and the guitar work is at ...

This is it...forget everyone else, this is the album that made everyone stand up and take notice of actual songs again.. from the start this album grabs your attention and doesnt let go...a true classic!!
The lyrics speak to a generation and united a country into loving great music again that was truely 'british' this was Oasis' time!!
Although they went on to have more success with 'morning glory' this was the album that set the precident for them to take more time and realise that they had a nation waiting for their releases, this was the album that made them the party band that the country wanted. I dont think a band has been as culturally viable as oasis since the beatles and in my opinion i dont think there will be another band that get to these heights as a band ever again.
As i said before, this album is a true classic! ...
One the best albums of the 1990's and the album that set the ball rolling for the giant that is Oasis. 15 years on and they are still going strong.
This album is full of classics including Supersonic, Shakermaker, Cigarettes & Alcohol and Slide Away. There are also some hidden gems on record in the shape of Digsys Dinner and Married with Children.
Many people regard 1995's Whats the Story Morning Glory as their best album, but this is easily equal to it.
The vinyl version contained one bonus song that was not available on the CD, this song was a track by the name of 'Sad Song' and is one of Noel Gallagher's finest vocal performances.
If you like Oasis, or even if you are unfamiliar with their music, this is one you should definitely consider owning if you dont already! ...
Advantages: Raw energetic brit pop at its best and most fresh. Disadvantages: You might still feel a sense of disloyality if you were a blur fan.
From the impatient and exciting first few chords of "Rock n Roll Star" to the almost irreverant "Married with Children" this is a real rollercoaster (or dare i say helter skelter) ride of an album. It seems to scream of belief that they knew that this would define a generation, and define it, it certainly did.
Easily the best Oasis album to have been released to date and understanably so as this was the produce of years of writing by main song-writer Noel Gallacher whilst he lived out his teenage years in the not-so respectable areas of Manchester.
Personally this album changed my entire outlook on music, in an era just after the death of grunge where one hit wonders and monotonous dance tracks topped the charts this album was released and blew everything else away!!
It is so hard for me to pick my favourite tracks on this album as ...

Oasis: Liam Gallagher (vocals); Noel Gallagher (guitar, background vocals); Paul Arthurs (guitar); Paul McGuigan (bass); Tony McCarroll (drums). Additional personnel: Anthony Griffiths (background vocals). Producers: Oasis, Mark Coyle, Dave Batchelor. Engineers include: Anjali Dutt, Dave Scott, Roy Spong. In 1967, Roger McGuinn laid down the blueprint for rock immortality in The Byrds' "So You Want To Be A Rock & Roll Star." The process, according to McGuinn, was an arduous one, involving taking "some time," learning "how to play," and generally accepting the prolonged pace at which stardom is achieved. Nearly two decades later, Oasis singer Liam Gallagher turns that road-tested advice onto its proverbial head. "In my mind my dreams are real," he exudes during DEFINITELY MAYBE's opening track. "Tonight, I'm a rock 'n' roll star." This is not a newcomer's brash, hollow hype; it's a statement of arrogant confidence. Much of DEFINITELY MAYBE, written with tons of '60's Brit-pop appreciation by guitarist Noel Gallagher, reflects the band's poses. The songs are about what they like ("Cigarettes & Alcohol"), who they want to be ("Rock 'n' Roll Star," "Live Forever"), and what they want to avoid becoming ("Married With Children"); and they defy turning into typical rock star cliches only through sheer will, as well as simultaneously pretty and edgy guitars. DEFINITELY MAYBE makes it supremely obvious that Oasis have studied the lessons of the English rock aristocracy--drawing on influences as superficially disparate as the Beatles, T. Rex and the Buzzcocks--and have learned them well. Nevertheless, it'll take some time to see whether or not the Gallaghers have rendered Roger McGuinn's blueprint anachronistic; DEFINITELY MAYBE confirms that they do begin with a more complete package than most.
