This is where it all began for the thieving magpies that are / were Oasis, and for a lot of fans it also ended. Though that is obviously a subject for heated debate. The problem with Oasis is that they were the Gallagher brothers toy , and everything revolved around that. Their arrogance and yobbery (is that a word) is anything but entertaining and they always come second best to Blur. You may gather that I'm not a particular fan of Oasis, well the truth is that the Gallagher's annoy the hell out of me, but that hasn't stopped them producing some very fine music , even if sometimes it is a blatant rip off (i.e. Step Out - Stevie Wonder's Uptight, the intro to Don't Look Back In Anger and the intro to Imagine to name but two blatant examples of their theft, there are many more), but anyway back to the album....

It open's with one of the finest tunes, the excellent swaggering "Rock'n'Roll Star" which surprisingly was not a single. In my opinion this is by far the best song on the album boasting a great intro, stunning chorus , and excellent coda, a near perfect piece of music, and how the hell can you follow that?

"Shakermaker" is the first track that we come to that was released as a single and bears more than a passing resemblance to a certain soft drinks advertisement. Commercial but plodding, but not offensive. "Live Forever" is another great song , regarded by many as one of Oasis' finest, and is definitely up there with the best. "Supersonic" was another single which does get you going , but don't listen too closely to the words , they're not very good, but that never stopped Abba, though they were Swedish so they've got an excuse. Though I suppose that Oasis are mancs so they have an excuse as well.

"Cigarettes and Alcohol" was the other single from the album and is a decent enough rocker, but nothing special, but , for obvious reasons, a favourite on pub jukeboxes. Of the remaining track "Up in the Sky" and "Slide Away" stand out.

So despite my problem with the Brothers Gallagher , I think this is a good album. The follow up is actually better, but that's about it for me. It's available at mid price and is worth buying for the first track alone. Unfortunately there's only so much music you can plunder before you start repeating yourself and by their third album Oasis , like the football team they support, were no longer premier league material.

This however, along with their second album ,is definitely top drawer. Worth 8 quid of anybody's money.
