Advantages: Beautifully restored versions of the greatest Holmes and Watson of all time Disadvantages: None a single one
The Definitivecollection of arguably the best Holmes and Watson: Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce can only be greeted with joy, which is just how it was treated by me when it arrived in the post. Containing all fourteen films in the series that began in 1939 with The Hound of the Baskervilles and culminating with the rather melodramatically titled Dressed to Kill in 1946.
For those not conversant with the Rathbone/Bruce Sherlock Holmes films, they began as almost A-movies for Twentieth Century Fox first in Hound and then The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. At this point Fox decided not to film any further adventures but Universal, ever desiring to put together B-movie series, which might draw in audiences, negotiated with Conan Doyle's estate to gain the rights. Successfully so, they brought back Rathbone, as an angular, slightly ...
Advantages: Very good first half. Disadvantages: Bad second half.
, the material wavers over time, and gets either less accessible or more schmaltzy. Some of the later stuff lacks inspiration, like Dark Is The Night' and 'Summer Has Moved On', which are both just average pop songs, which (dare I say it) wouldn't sound out of place on a Westlife album.
So my recommendation is this - if you can get this album for cheap - I did for £2.99 - then it's a nice purchase. But it's an all better investment to get the album 'Hunting High And Low', which is one of the best pop album of all time in my opinion. Album Notes
Dokken: Don Dokken, George Lynch, Juan Croucier, Mick Brown. Recording information: 1982 - 2004. Pop-metal outfit Dokken maintained an impressive presence on the charts and in the arenas throughout the 1980s, and continued to churn out albums in the 1990s and 2000s. The hefty, two-disc DEFINITIVE ROCK surveys the band's entire career, dating back to the title track from their debut, BREAKING THE CHAINS, and continuing through to 2004's HELL TO PAY. Marked by pounding riffs, hooky melodies, Don Dokken's soaring vocals, and Greg Lynch's pyrotechnic guitar work, Dokken epitomizes the golden age of hair metal, and their best-loved tunes ("Into the Fire;" "Dream Warriors") are here alongside a bevy of choice album cuts and live tracks.
