Pink Floyd live!
At one time this would have been considered a contradiction in terms. Their music showed the affects that drugs, plus Roger Waters is a bit barking anyway, had on their music. However, this is a nicely sanitised version of some of their best tracks and could be considered a good place to start for the uninitiated.
The line up is minus dodgey Roger, but Dave Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright don't ... ...are infamously packed with lasers lights and a large sound, but obviously you only get to hear as opposed to see.
Recorded in August during their 1988 tour, here are 15 tracks that are instantly known to PF fans. If this is to be your first introduction to the band, and you like them, please bear in mind the original tracks are probably 3 times more atmospheric (please read:weird) and in some cases, 3 times better.

These are the tracks that make the album, for me.
"Shine On You Crazy Diamond". Might as well kick off with a classic! Dave Gilmour's guitar skills are very much in evidence on this swooping and psychadelic mainly instrumental track. This was written for the much missed Sid Barrett (the orginal "took a trip and never came back" merchant) and it was almost worth him disappearing to have this track written.
"One Of These Days". Ooooooooh scary stuff. Fantastic growly voice booms over the screaming crowd and the pounding drums, just to give you some idea of just how LOUD it must have been to be there.
"Time". Killer track from Dark Side Of The Moon, complete with the alarm clocks/big ben sounds/general ticking noise that is so familiar on the album. Great lyrics in this song, great melody, great track beautifully played.
"Wish You Were Here". Magical and timeless, the only problem with this track is that I don't think it should be played with a big sound. Far better when listened to on the album of the same name, but that's not to say it's not given good treatment in the show.
"Us & Them". The contrast of the strength and power of the music together with the lone sax that plays through this track is excellent. A good smooth sound that does great justice to the slow and relaxing track.
"Money". Ring those cash registers! Excellent rendition of yet another classic from Dark Side Of The Moon. Mr. Gilmour really goes to town with the guitar on this. Just listen to him bend those notes.
"Comfortably Numb". This is my favourite from The Wall, and probably my favourite on the whole double album. Beautifully performed, it really does manage to make you feel separate and apart from reality, floating in some sort of coma. Bizarre feeling but such a fantastic feel and set of lyrics that this really does have to be experienced.
The tracks that didn't get the write ups are "Learning To Fly", "Yet Another Movie", "Round And Round", "Sorrow", "The Dogs Of War", "On The Turning Away", "Another Brick In The Wall (pt II)", "Run Like Hell".
It's not because I didn't like them, I do, but just for the seven listed alone I would buy this album again. It kicks up quite a storm...
Advantages: Good Variation Disadvantages: Double Cd, means someone has to change it if you aren't using a multichanger cd player!
One of Pink Floyd's more 'delicate' albums! A fantastic collection of Roger Water's capabilities and the harmony of David Gilmours guitar playing skills. A live recording giving a wide spectrum of Pink Floyd music, including the controversial 'Shine on you Crazy Diamond', allegedly aimed at the ex floyd member Sid Barratt.
A good variation from the more sombre shine on, to the more division bell style of learning to fly, then on to the blues feeling ... ...back meaning when you are chilling out to the sounds of Floys, somebody has to change the cd's over, unless you have a cd multi changer I can imagine this being a right pain!!!
One of the later of the Floyd albums that isn't to heavy or sombre like some of the earlier albums of the seventies.
A good all round choice for the Pink Floyd fan, plenty of the usual soulful music that you would expect from Pink Floyd, with the usual reference to drugs.

Advantages: A couple of songs are quite good. Disadvantages: Confused, discordant and bland.
and unsatisfied, as it does at the end of this mediocre release.
'A Momentary Lapse of Reason' is probably the least essential item in your PinkFloyd collection, especially as some of the best songs appear on the excellent live album 'Pulse,' as well as the rather less excellent live album 'The DelicateSound of Thunder.' Gilmour's PinkFloyd is little more than a shambolic money-making exercise for a man whose solo career was faring only adequately, and it's a shame that 1994's 'Division Bell' is the only effort the band made in remedying this problem and maintaining their credibility. The best songs on here can be found elsewhere, while the worst ('Dogs of War' and 'A New Machine') should have remained on the cutting room floor. To address the all-so-important debate I mentioned earlier, Waters' 'The Final Cut' is probably better than 'A ...
Advantages: Cliffs of Dover!!! Disadvantages: A couple of weaker tracks!
Tube?age and checked out a few of his other songs, some of which, similar to ?Cliffs of Dover? were instrumentals again led by a great sounding guitar. So, I was settled, needed to get some of his albums. But which one to start with? At first, I was pretty sure it was going to be ?Ah Via Musicom? his 1990 album, which features the track which I so love, but in HMV, my eyes drifted slightly to another album, the simply named ?Live from Austin, TX?. Hmm, I thought, a live album. Typically speaking, a live album can either be great, or terrible ? either capturing the atmosphere of live music, the feelings, the ambience, the whole lot (i.e. PinkFloyd?s PULSE or DelicateSound of Thunder), or it can be a bit crappy. I thought back to some of the YouTube videos I had watched, one was a live rendition of ?Cliffs of Dover? which nearly blew me away, and with that ...
and part two. Live performance of this majestic piece surfaced on "The DelicateSound Of Thunder" and a brilliant live version was performed against the elements as the introduction to PinkFloyd's one off appearance at Knebworth House in 1990.
"Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun
Shine on you crazy diamond
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky
Shine on you crazy diamond ..."
2. Welcome To The Machine (Waters), 7:22 min.
The subject matter of the album now shifts away from the tragedy of Barrett's sorry tale to dea with the industrial face of the music business which egulfed the young Syd for "Welcome To The Machine". This is an inspired piece of composition by Roger Waters, the compelling rhythm of "Welcome To The Machine" is driven by sounds of synthesised heavy industrial machines which ...

Album Notes
Pink Floyd: David Gilmour (guitar, vocals); Richard Wright (keyboards); Nick Mason (drums). Additional personnel: Tim Renwick (guitars, vocals); Scott Page (saxophone); Jon Carin (keyboards, vocals); Guy Pratt (bass, vocals); Gary Wallis (percussion); Margret Taylor, Rachel Fury, Durga McBroom (background vocals). This comes with a 28 page booklet. This 1988 release by the seminal British outfit shows a band with a renewed vigor that comes out in their live show. After a bitter break with bassist and WALL mastermind Roger Waters, the band finally regrouped minus their erstwhile leader, with the rights to the Floyd name. They recorded and toured behind A MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON, and that tour is captured here. Produced by vocalist/guitarist David Gilmour, the album is a smooth performance from a group usually considered to be a studio band. Classics such as "Wish You Were Here" and "Comfortably Numb" are given room to breathe, making for refreshing variations on the original versions. Radio hits such as "On the Turning Away" are also given new light in the live format, with a choir adding depth. More than just a display of arena rock power, THUNDER shows seasoned veterans jamming on timeless material. Closing with a spirited "Run Like Hell", this album gives the listener a picture of one of life's essential experiences, a Pink Floyd concert.
