moved to tears, but received a telling-off from
his granny for his unboyish behaviour. Novelist
Jeanette Winterson considers "Vissi d'arte" (I
lived for art) from Tosca "a call to arms". Elvis
Costello thinks that "When I am Laid in Earth"
from Purcell's Dido and Aeneas is so sad that "it
should only be played once every three years".
This two-disc set collects the pieces of opera
most frequently requested by guests on Desert
Island Discs and, fascinatingly, also reveals why.
The recordings are not necessarily the specific
ones requested (Jasper Conran wanted Callas
singing "Vissi d'arte"; here it is Josephine
Barstow) but are all serviceable. There are no
surprises for buffs--Verdi, Puccini, Mozart and
Bizet are all well-represented--but as an
entry-level taster to the world of opera it does
the business. (And as an irresistible piece of
trivia, sex-therapist Dr Ruth Westheimer requested
a man as her luxury item: but failing that, a

Advantages: Brilliant guitar post rock covers a spectrum of emotions
Disadvantages: if you have neigbours you need to play it loud on headphones

...Yes I know "What the hell has that got to do this album". Well last year I went coast to coast in the USA . 16 states, 4 trains,14 buses, and one boat! Like "Desert island discs" I needed music for this monumental trip, but where to start? Traveling light I had to limit myself to half a dozen CD's (having heard that i-Pod's were the most stolen items in the states) So out came my trusty walkman and this was one of my choices of CD. Can you imagine how the power and delicate beauty of this guitar based quartet sounded passing through such places as Nebraska, Mounument Valley, and The Coastal Pacific Highway. This Band hail from Houston, Texas. And I can just hear how thier song writing craft was shaped by the rugged plains and breathtaking scenery. I love the precision and passion and the way they have left some rough edges when mixing... Read review

Advantages: The best album in the world ever
Disadvantages: You must be joking

...island disc this would be it. From the opening "Rockaway Beach" to the closing "We're a Happy Family" you have twenty eight pieces of brilliance. This is one CD that you will never program, as ever track is as good as each other. Your treated to "Surfin' Bird" (the first ever Surf Song which was nothing to do with surfing , orginally by the Trashmen and later covered by The Cramps) one of the longer tracks at 2.19. It's got "Lets Dance", "Sheena is A Punk Rocker" , "Blitzkrieg Bop" , in fact all of the hits and lots more. In fact this is probably the best album ever made....probably It's on mid price so you've no excuse for not buying it...so just buy it. You may have gathered that I think it's quite good I've deliberately put that it's completely unoriginal, it is , but no one does the Ramones as good as the Ramones, and this them... Read review

Its Alive I Think

Advantages: Possibly The Best album ever made
Disadvantages: You must be joking

...I assume this is the "It's Alive" album and am reviewing / opinionating as such. Now under the proper heading. If Ramones songs can be equated to smarties (you can never have just one) , and albums by logical extension therefore equated to a tube of smarties, this is one of those huge tubes that you get at Christmas. This outguns their studio albums and their compilations. It's got 28 tracks , the longest of which clock in at a mammoth two minutes and forty seconds (now I know what Charles Edward Berry was on about when he wrotr "Roll Over Beethoven". All Ramones songs start with One-Two-Three-Four then into buzzsaw guitar driven 4/4 rock'n'roll, and this is over an hour of it. Can you overdose on perfection? Advantages: Cracking album, great songs, chilled out, upbeat. Just Ace.
Disadvantages: I can't think of a single solitary little one. HURRAH!

...is Whatevers Written In Your Heart, it is a beautiful slow track, but honestly, there isn't a single bad track on the album. It makes absolutely PERFECT Sunday listening - the calm before the storm of Monday Morning.!! Exquisite. This album definitely goes on my Desert Island Discs!... Read review
