...favourite album of hers is Design of a Decade 1986/1996, so called because it spans a decade of her work. I like it because it's a compilation album and contains some of her. It's probably best described as a greatest hits album. It was released in 1995 and was certified double platinum by the RIAA in 1995, and has since sold nearly 7 million copies worldwide.
Highlights on this album for me have to be the wonderful duet with Luther ... ...and Whoops Now, a fun and flirty track. The rest of the tracks are as follows:
"Runaway" "What Have You Done for Me Lately" "Nasty" "When I Think of You" "Escapade" "Miss You Much" "Whoops Now" "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" "Alright" "The Best Things in Life Are Free" more
Janet, probably the second most famous Jackson is also known for her great music and has had a long career in the music business. Her songs are probably not as loved as some of Michael's but I do enjoy a lot of her stuff. Janet, an American actress and singer is actually the youngest of all the Jackson siblings and she began her singing career at the age of sixteen, over twenty five years ago!
Janet has quite a different sound to Michael. Whereas he is quite pop in my opinion, Janet definitely has a more R&B sound, quite soulful and with an upbeat vibe. She also has quite a lot of dance style tracks as well. What I like about Janet is that her songs are different and sound different from each other. Often I find with a lot of female artists they can sound a bit samey but I think Janet always produces a good mix of tunes.
According to an article I read, Janet was named the second most successful recording artist of the 1990s. I don't find this hard to believe but I still think she is perhaps not as famous or successful (or should I can iconic) as other female artists such as Madonna or Mariah Carey who I think it would be fair to compare her with. Jackson is ranked by Billboard magazine as one of the top ten best-selling music artists in the history of contemporary music, having sold over 100 million albums worldwide. The Recording Industry Association of America lists her as the eleventh best-selling female artist in the United States, with 26 million certified albums.

Highlights on this album for me have to be the wonderful duet with Luther Vandross, The Best Things in Life are Free (very true) and Whoops Now, a fun and flirty track. The rest of the tracks are as follows:
"Runaway" "What Have You Done for Me Lately" "Nasty" "When I Think of You" "Escapade" "Miss You Much" "Whoops Now" "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" "Alright" "The Best Things in Life Are Free" "Control" "The Pleasure Principle" "Black Cat" "Rhythm Nation" "That's the Way Love Goes" "Come Back to Me" (Remix) – 5:36 "Let's Wait Awhile" – 4:36 "Twenty Foreplay" (International Edit) – 5:20
Advantages: Stacks of hits Disadvantages: Songs are in random order, lots of songs missed out
Janet's first two albums didn't do very well but then she released "Control" and the rest is history, as they say. Many of her hit singles since then are on "Design of a Decade".
This album was released in 1995 and I actually borrowed it from the library!
Track 1 is "Runaway". This was a new song from this album and it had an elaborate video but it's quite a boring song, despite being about Janet's travels around the world, and I can't actually understand what Janet is singing a lot of the time. It's a bad start to this album.
Track 2 is "What Have You Done For Me Lately?" which is a fine slice of 1980s dance taken from "Control". Janet is in demanding mode here, wanting to know why her man isn't putting as much effort into their relationship as he used to. "You seem to think you're God's gift to this earth.."
Track 3 ...
Advantages: All the greatest hits in one package Disadvantages: Not enough hits from the janet. album
JanetJackson has long broken away from the shadow of the Jackson 5 and Michael. This greatest hits collection combines her two successful albums ´Control´ and ´Rhythm Nation´ as well as two singles from the ´janet.´ album and a previously unavailable single with Luther Vandross ´The Best Things in Life are Free.´
In addition, Janet unveils two new singles for her fans. ´Runaway´ was a song for the fans who have always been there with her, especially on her amazing tours and ´Twenty Fourplay´ is probably one of her sexiest songs ever. `Twenty Fourplay´ is so sexy that it makes you wanna...
If you are lucky to get the special edition version of this album, you can get a second cd with dance remixes of her earlier hits from the two flops she released before ´Control´. Although this album lacks the major hits from the ´janet.´ album ...
This is JanetJackson's greatest hits collection and contains some of her best work. She is such a great artist and second to Michael she is the best in the Jackson family. Runaway is one of Jackson's best songs and she combines her great R&B voice with pop tunes. Rhythm Nation is my favourite song though and the words are particularly thought provoking, this is the best of JanetJackson and any pop and R&B fans should not miss this great album. Love will never do is a great song as well, Janet's lyrics are always though provoking and meaningful. ...

Album Notes
DESIGN OF A DECADE 1986/1996 is a greatest-hits album with two new tracks: "Runaway" and "Twenty Foreplay." Personnel includes: Janet Jackson (vocals); Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis (various instruments, background vocals); Mike Scott, Nuno Bettencourt (guitar); Caroline Daws, Brenda Mickens, Helen Foli, Dick Massman, Laurie Hippen, Julia Persitz, Andrea Een, Liz Sobieski (violin); Alice Preves, Hasan Sumen (viola); Josh Koestenbaum, Laura Sewell (cello); Ken Holmen (flute); Greg Hippen (bass); Stokley (drums); Fred McFarlane, Alan Friedman (programming); Jerome Benton, Jellybean Johnson (background vocals). Pricipally recorded at Flyte Tyme Studios, Edina, Minnesota. Includes liner notes by David Ritz. Need to replace your worn-out copies of CONTROL and RHYTHM NATION 1814? DESIGN OF A DECADE is the two-for-one answer, whittling those two '80s R&B landmarks down to their thirteen blockbuster hits, adding the 1993 single "That's The Way Love Goes" and two new tracks. It's one beat-crazy disc that will rival Madonna's THE IMMACULATE COLLECTION as the essential document of female pop of the '80s. Janet Jackson's solo career began in 1982, but it didn't really take off until 1986. CONTROL left everything else behind. The title track is a declaration of independence that explicitly dismissed her famous parents and her brief marriage to James DeBarge. In doing so, Jackson launched her music inexorably forward. CONTROL's songs are bottom-heavy, keyboard-controlled blasts of electronic pop that shook off her family's sweet soul in favor of the raw funk feel and steely techno sound of modern clubland. They continued the mid-'80s pop revolution started by brother Michael and Prince, and added an unmistakable feminist stamp. Yet the revolution also allowed such pillowy pop moments as "Let's Wait Awhile," an apparent ode to virginity. RHYTHM NATION--from which seven of this compilation's tracks are drawn--went even further, blowing up the music's funky bottom and adding shots of heavy-metal guitar and heavy-mental social conscience. DESIGN OF A DECADE begins and ends with new recordings. "Twenty Foreplay," a demand for total devotion from her lover, is a ballad on which Jackson sounds eerily like her brother, except in her sexual frankness. "Runaway" is a breezy, xylophone-driven pop tune that may seem like a retreat from her funkiest advances; then again, it may be just one more stretch in Janet Jackson's universal pop ambitions.
Album Reviews
NME (12/23-30/95, p.23) - Ranked #4 on NME's `Compilations Of The Year' list for 1995. Spin (12/95, p.85) - 7 - Flawed Yet Worthy - "...state-of-the-art production right down to her sculpted nose....Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are the unofficial second and third Janet Jacksons. Their triumph is letting their dazzling sound sculptures fade into the background of Janet's cartoon antics..." Entertainment Weekly (10/6/95, pp.60-62) - "...makes a satisfying case for Jackson as the first new-jill swinger....her attitude--feisty and take-charge...--did help elevate the role of women in pop....The new songs show how much more confident a singer Jackson has become..." - Rating: B+
