The first time I listened to this album I was left feeling unimpressed and a little bored. After the first two songs, the stomping first single "lose my breath" and "soldier" the album drifts into collection of mid-tempo tracks most of which sounded the same to me. However, on the second and third listens I found the change in style from the previous albums quite refreshing and many of the songs had a real old style, soulful feel that I loved. The singing is, as always, outstanding, with much more from Michelle and Kelly this time. However I do feel that this could have easily been a solo album from Beyonce because when Kelly and Michelle are singing, I can't help thinking Beyonce would have sounded better.
Here are my opinions of all the tracks:
1. Lose my breath 10/10- great first single, perhaps my favourite DC single ever. However I think this single is misleading and does not at all represent the album.
2. Soldier 7/10- I like this a lot. This is leaning slightly more in the hip hop
direction with appearences by T.I. & Lil' Wayne. Said to be about Beyonce's boyfriend, Jay Z.
3. Cater 2 U- This song starts off well with the first verse, sung beatifully by Beyonce, after that it goes rapidly down hill. The lyrics are awful, (e.g. "I got your slippers, your dinner, your dessert, and so much more") which could be the reason why I don't like it. Maybe with good lyrics it could be a very pleasant song as the melody is fairly good.
4. T-Shirt- This song starts off very badly with Beyonce speaking, "Hey baby I wish you could see what I have on right now...", this just makes me cringe and I hate it. I actually quite like this song, but it annoys me because the lyrics are silly and its about them sleeping in their boyfriend's T-Shirt- how very deep. If the lyrics were replaced with something more meaningful then this would be very nice indeed.
5. Is She The Reason?- This is where I get what I payed for. I love this track- great lyrics, great melody, great vocals- just great! It has a real old school feel to it and I love the lyrics. I especially like Beyonce's second verse "See I know we're not official, but us being official ain't ever been an issue". I think this is an example of Destiny's Child trying something more mature and getting it right, unlike tracks 3 and 4.
6. Girl- I can say similar things about this track as I did for track 5, but I'm not liking it as much, but it is still good. It's a sweet song about looking out for friends and their voices sound perfect as usual.
7. Bad Habit- This is fairly good, sung very well by Kelly. Again, nothing amazing or ground breaking but very nice all the same.
8. If- This is one of my favourites. The verses are sung alternately by all three of the girls which is a nice change. It's another soulful, old style sounding track. The beats and vocals of the song are very soft and sweet. Unfortunatly there's another speaking part, at the end, this time by Kelly, which by no means ruins it, but really doesn't help.
9. Free- Both verses are sung by Beyonce and she sounds great. I like this song but again it's the same sort of style as the others, and by this point in the album I'm looking for something a bit different.
10. Through with love- I just love this song, my favourite on the album. Everything about it is beautiful and their voices sound simply amazing. The first verse, sung by Beyonce starts of quite low and subdued then builds up to the chorus, which has a fantastic melody. Beyonce belts it out for the send verse ("Oh there you go, comparing me...Oh there you go complaining to me). Kelly sings the third verse, very nice but not as good as Beyonce's verses then Michelle sings the bridge before belting out over the chorus ("I don't have to hurt no more") which really makes her voice shine. Listening to this for the first time, made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, if this isn't a single then I don't know what it is.
11. Love- After profusely complaing that they were "through with love", the girls seem to be back into it again on the track. I don't have much to say for this track and I can barely remember the lyrics or how it goes, which says it all really.
12. Game Over (Bonus Track)- I really like this, its a real grower. I've never really understood bonus tracks, why not just have it as a normal track if it's good enough? Anyway, this is yet another mid tempo track but sounds different to the others.
Overall, this album is trying hard to go in a different direction to the previous albums, and in some places succeeds very well and in others, fails miserably. I'd reccomend it to any R&B fan, if not download "Through with love" and "Is she the reason" and you'll have the cream of the crop.
