I bought this CD back in 2004 for one reason only; I liked the track 'Soldier'. Oh okay, a band that produced videos with Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams and Beyonce prancing around, well, what can I say. This album was the fourth studio album and was produced in 2004.
On to the serious business of the music.
~~~Tracks~~~
1. Lose My Breath Quite a lively number very catchy in a club R&B style. Great use of what I think are trumpets. What I do like about this song is that it is three women being overtly sexual in an industry that is male dominated. Not a great song but a decent lively opener 6/10.
2. Soldier (featuring T.I. & Lil Wayne) The reason I bought the album, great mix of R&B and rap/hip hop, great bass line and use of drums. Again an overtly predatory sexual song. It is very raw and tough and full of innuendo "Known to carry big things if you know what I mean".
The vocal 'turns' that the women have really works well. T.I. and Lil Wayne lend some serious credibility to the song. It has such an infectious beat that it really does get right inside, good stuff 9/10.
3. Cater 2 U Schmulz......from being sexual beings this song is all about being subservient to their 'men'. Much more in a traditional R&B style, I hate it. 1/10.
4. T-Shirt Oh no, more cr*p '(oh) give it to me deeper, (oh) give me the fever', etc. Noooooooo. 0/10.
5. Is She the Reason More R&B ballad rubbish, could be playing in any bar in the background whilst we sip latte's. 0/10.
6. Girl More R&B woman scorned story. At least the vocals are good and the music builds more like an old soul song that new. 2/10.
7. Bad Habit Starts well, quite quirky in fact, bit of a Latin beat. Still following the same theme as the previous few songs, but a little better in that it has some good harmonies which fit well with the instruments, I would quite like to hear this as an instrumental. 3/10.
8. If No! another ballad, this one seems to owe something to Diana Ross and the Supremes, it is certainly of that style, or maybe Three Degrees, the comparisons are obvious for a number of reasons. Pleasant but hardly sets the World on fire. 3/10.
9. Free Very Motown in lots of ways, bit of a funk bass line too. Okay vocals. Not good, but getting better. 4/10.
10. Through with Love Nice bass start with edgey piano and drums. More of 'woman scorned' but okay as it has a big slice of angst pie. Has a good beat too, and feels just a little more 'real'. The vocals border on rapping in places and we are getting more of a feel of the first couple of songs. Not getting transferred to my iPod, but listenable. 5/10.
11. Love Oh boring rubbish again. 0/10.
International bonus track 12. Game Over Traditional R&B ballad style, not my thing, really does not do it for me, like the use of strings. 2/10.
~~~Final Thoughts~~~ If you are a fan of R&B ballads, rush out and get this, if not, avoid it like the plague. 'Soldier' is really the best track by far, 'Lose My Breath' is okay and way above all the other tracks, but even that falls far short of 'Soldier'.
Not a great, not even a good album in my opinion.
