Advantages: A fun show with a lot of energy and some impeccable multicultural performances Disadvantages: A couple of pieces not so great, audience presence can be disturbing
Yanni (born Yiannis Chrysomallis) is probably one of the most popular musical artists in the world specializing in predominately instrumental music. Being very much a self-taught talent, he was born in Kalamata, Greece, where he learned to play the piano and tried his hand at composition as well. He eventually left Greece and enrolled as a student to the University of Minnesota where he joined the rock group Chameleon, headed by drummer Charlie Adams, involving themselves with some small time touring to no great fame. After growing tired to the life of a rock'n'roller he decided to focus solely on instrumental music as a composer and soloist, soon to be followed in this endeavor by Adams as well, the two of them striking out a collaboration that has lasted to this day. After gathering some fame with his 1992 album "Dare to Dream," he ...
Advantages: Excellent humour and generally a good read Disadvantages: quite gory in places!!
Background:
A friend of mine at work knows I love a good crime novel, so he told me to try a book by Jeff Lindsay. He told me I would either love it or hate it. So I thought I should give it a try, just to shut him up at the very least.
About the author:
Jeff Lindsay was born in the USA in 1952. Among his achievements are being a World Champion in Karate and a successful playwright. So far he has written four crime novels featuring Dexter Morgan as its main character. These are: Darkly Dreaming Dexter (2004), Dearly Devoted Dexter (2005), Dexter in the Dark (2007) and Dexter by Design (2008).
About the book:
Dexter Morgan works for the Miami Police Department as a blood-splatter analysis.
In his spare time he hunts serial killers who have avoided detection by the Police. He looks for evidence and once found kills them ...
Advantages: IMO Depeche Mode's best live DVD to date: a fantastic performance & wonderfully reworked songs. Disadvantages: Can't really think of any!
Filmed in both Frankfurt and Barcelona during Depeche Mode's sold out 1993 Devotional tour, by renowned music video director and photographer Anton Corbijn (as you may or may not know, Depeche Mode's longtime visual collaborator). The two-tier stage (also designed by Corbijn) is panelled with projection screens displaying different images and videos throughout the entire concert that enhance each performance. Another notable thing about the stage set up is the dramatic use of lighting, which works to particularly great effect in the opening song, Higher Love. The lighting captures the shadows of each band member, projecting them onto the curtains that are draped across the stage.
Although this was a terrible time for Depeche Mode and band relations were at their worst, you wouldn't know it from this performance! Dave Gahan has what ...
The leading icon of New Age music, Yanni became a full-blown pop-culture phenomenon in the early 1990s. With his flowing hair and dashing good looks providing the perfect image for his bold, keyboard-driven compositions, the Greek performer won the hearts of millions of fans worldwide. His popularity reached its peak in 1994 with the multi-platinum LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS album and video. DEVOTION: THE BEST OF YANNI draws from the artist's mid-'80s-to-mid-'90s period, focusing on 1992's DARE TO DREAM, with six tracks from that album. Songs here include the chiming "Once Upon a Time," the sweeping "Song for Antarctica," and the soaringly operatic "Aria." The collection also features two tracks from the aforementioned live recording--"The End of August," a spare number that showcases Yanni's delicate piano playing, and "Marching Season," a jaunty, Mannheim Steamroller-like tune. For an ideal Yanni primer, look no further than DEVOTION.
