Advantages: Witty, clever and interesting Disadvantages: Some irritating characters, far-fetched in parts
WHAT IS IT:
WHAT IS IT:
Dexter is an American drama series based on the novel 'Darkly Dreaming Dexter' by Jeff Lindsay. It follows blood spatter analyst Dexter Morgan and his sister Deborah in their work in the homicide department of the Miami police department. But Dexter is leading a double life as he seeks revenge on the guilty who have escaped justice somehow. Things get even more tense for the charming sociopath as the Ice Truck Killer - whose bloodless murder victims inspire Dexter in their professionalism - starts to communicate with Dexter hinting that he knows his secret.
GOOD POINTS:
Michael C Hall is absolutely superb as Dexter and his performance gives credibility to what would otherwise be a completely ridiculous basis for a TV show. He delivers some great deadpan comedy and very rarely falls into the cliché ...
Advantages: Interesting concept, unusual writing style Disadvantages: Perhaps a bit slow at first
This is a review originally written for dooyoo.
Intro Having decided that I needed some more books to read I consulted the charity book list at work (books for the bargain price of 25p) and came across "Darkly Dreaming Dexter". I was aware that there is a TV series called "Dexter", so consulted Amazon to see if this was the same thing, and found that it was!
I haven't ever seen the TV programme but have heard good things about it and decided to give the book a go, as I'd found that "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" was the first in the series (I didn't want to come in having missed something) which is what the first series of the TV programme was based upon.
Jeff Lindsay The author Jeff Lindsay (pen name) is American - more can be found about him here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JeffLindsay(writer) He has written ...
Advantages: Very funny throughout Disadvantages: storyline lacked bite and punch
Background:
About nine months ago I read my first novel by Jeff Lindsay featuring an usual character called Dexter. I was unsure to be honest what I thought of it, so I was keen to try another one and see if the writers? style either grew on me or turned me off his work completely. Admittedly it took me long enough to get round to it. Since then I have even seen an episode of this on television.
About the author:
Jeff Lindsay was born in America on July 14th 1952. However I should point out this is not his real name, that is Jeffry P. Freunlich. He is best known for his Dexter series of novels, which have now very successfully been transferred as above to television. He has written eight novels, of which the last four have featured Dexter as the lead character.
Synopsis of the book:
Dexter Morgan is a monster ...

Album Notes
Personnel: Dexter Gordon (tenor saxophone); Jimmy Robinson (trumpet); Carl Perkins (piano); Leroy Vinnegar (bass); Chuck Thompson (drums). Includes liner notes by Jon Clare. DEXTER BLOWS HOT AND COOL was released at the outset of the saxophonist's hard-bop period. Often referred to as the horn player who served as the bridge between swing and bop styles, Gordon lives up to the definition with his combination of edgy, harmonic complexity and cool, Lester Young-inspired lyricism. An outstanding example of the latter can be found in the practically flawless version of "Cry Me A River," in which Gordon's tenor paints sound pictures of exquisite, aching beauty. The driving, exuberant energy of such tracks as "Rhythm Mad" and "I Hear Music" shows that, while Dexter was influenced heavily by the swing saxophonists, he is still firmly rooted in the bop movement and owes as much to Parker as he does to Hawkins and Young. But Gordon's style is his own, as evidenced by his bright, earthy tone and unique expressive vocabulary. Marked by variety, strong compositions, and a fine group of backing musicians (including Carl Perkins on piano), this set indeed shows the hornsman making good on the title of the disc.
