Dice In Flames - Lucky Devils

Advantages: Bursting with ideas.
Disadvantages: Won't win any new fans.

...This is the first album the Flaming Lips produced after being signed to Warner Bros. They couldn't believe it when they got a $100,000 advance, and consequently spent it all on making this little beauty. As a result, and in it's own way, it's the equal of The Soft Bulletin, only relocated to 1992 and scored with generous dollops of fuzzed-up guitar. The sheer scope and imagination invested in this LP leaves pretty much every other band for dust. You Have To Be Joking (Autopsy Of The Devil's Brain) even has a string section sampled from Michael Kamen's score for the movie Brazil...and it works perfectly. Then there's the acid-tinged Beach Boys homage Frogs and the throbbing Felt Good To Burn with its echoey vocal harmonies. All Lips fans should own this record.... Read review

Advantages: Value for money, good to dance to.

...Turn on that music Come on and groove Get off your seat and start to move. 'Better The Devil You Know' was one of Kylie's hits But when Steps had their turn, They wore devil kits. 'Summer of Love' is so upbeat It's one of their coolest songs If you don't buy this album Then you're sure to be wrong. 'Stomp, stomp, stomp' It's a pleasure, so fine I hope this album's yours 'Cause it's certainly mine. 'It's The Way You Make Me Feel' takes me over the moon. The video looks so good, Are you buying it soon? 'Happy Go Lucky' is a brill hit track, The music's just wicked STEPS ARE BACK! There's several more songs Almost as good, Could you listen to this all day? I definitely could!... Read review

Advantages: Noise and melody, fitting tribute!
Disadvantages: Ummm...

...If you want to leave a legacy, this is not a bad way to do it! Bon Scott, AC/DC's lead singer and driving force died not long after this album was released. But what a legacy to leave. This album is full of raw power, simple power chords, and dirty lyrices, but is also full of AC/DC classics. The opening track, Highway to Hell, has become an AC/DC classic, but is also an eerie reminder of the ironies of life, given the tragic events of Scott. The album produces a variety of gems, including, 'The Girls Got a Rhythm', the magnificent 'Shot Down in Flames' and the vastly underrated 'If You Want Blood - You Got It.' The whole album is encapulated by the front cover, where a snarling Angus Young takes centre stage, and to his left is Bon Scott, smiling almost perversely at his young friend, as if he is the devil.
