The second song on the album, 'When you were mine', could be described as one of the greatest pop tunes ever written, and not just by Prince. It is absolutely fabulous, and doesn't date a day since 1980 when it was released. This could be reason enough for buying this album.
The next stound out song is track 6, 'Head'. I will leave it up to your own imagination what the song is about but it leaves nothing much to the imagination. more

Track 7 is 'sister', a song about incest. Nuff said.
Overall, the album is a good one. Tremendous songs with tremendous lyrics, even if they are somewhat crude.
Advantages: Great music; inspired writing; kept up with the times nicely Disadvantages: Couple of stinking ballads - he didn't wanna do that!
A ballad. Euuuugh.

Another epic as we the end of an eventful album. This could almost be described as a ballad, but there's too much depth and originality going on to label it as balladic dirge. And with the changes in tempo and styles over the ensuing 6 minutes, this could almost be Prince's Bohemian Rhapsody!

16. The Sacrifice Of Victor
A great way to end the album. Funky, upbeat and with plenty of life. The unsubtle hip hop beats are back and the backing vocalists are earning their salaries big time! This mid paced, James Brown, mid-70's pastiche alone can almost make up for the two awful ballads and fake reggae track of earlier.

Advantages: Diverse styles; features "Kiss" Disadvantages: Slightly too psychadelic in parts
with short songs, funk anthems, bonkers backwards instruments and women garbling away in French, Prince plays his trump card: a seven minute piano ballad. Admittedly the opening line: "Tracy died just after a long-fought civil war" kind of sets the tone and it's not one for fans of S-Club! But Prince's wobbly vocals on the verses and husky falsetto on the chorus are just brilliant. I hate ballads, but this one, I don't know, I just gets me right here (**points to heart**). Moving.

TBM: The ability to make a seven minute ballad go so quickly!

Ciao members have rated this review on average: very helpful Review of Parade - Prince
Personnel: Prince (vocals, various instruments); Lisa Coleman (vocals); "Dr." Matt Fink (synthesizer); Bobby Z (drums); Dez Dickerson, Andre Cymone. DIRTY MIND is the most focused and uncompromising of Prince's early albums. In 1980, the Purple one wasn't a superstar, he was an undeniably gifted weirdo, sort of a funk/R&B Todd Rundgren, composing, performing and producing everything himself. His singular vision combined a driving, spare R&B style driven by danceable drum machines, funk guitar and colorful synths, (a palpable new wave influence is also at work here) with a near-scandalous attitude towards sex. The unprecedently graphic lyrics of tunes like "Head" and "Sister" make rock & roll rebels of the past decades look like uptight puritans. Prince hadn't yet developed the panoramic production style that would define his greatest '80s album, but this leaner, more direct sound suits the visceral material well.
