A Reintroduction to Glen Campbell

Advantages: Classic songs sung beautifully, great instrumentalists and orchestra
Disadvantages: For me there really are none!

Capitol record label, his greatest success was with recordings of songs written by Jimmy Webb, including "Galveston", "Witchita Lineman" and "Where's the Playground, Susie". My rudiments of American geography were gleaned from hearing "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" as a child. Campbell's career went into decline in the late 70s and he has had battles with drugs and alcohol - the usual demons to hit successful artists unfortunately - and while his back catalogue will always keep him in work, as a fine singer and guitar player his talents hadn't been utilised properly for some time. The Album Producer Julian Raymond came up with the concept for "Meet Glen Campbell" which brought Campbell back to the Capitol fold in 2008. Raymond submitted songs to Campbell to choose for the album and the end result is Campbell's take on other artist ...

The Flood by Ian Rankin

Advantages: Good story, enjoyable writing and exciting ending
Disadvantages: No epilogue

Background I'm sure most people have heard of this author Ian Rankin through the Rebus books and television series. This was however my first experience of his work. About the Author Ian Rankin was born in Fife, Scotland in 1960. He is the UK's Number 1 selling crime author. So far he has written 27 novels, of which his most successful have been the Rebus books. His first novel was indeed 'The Flood', which originally was planned for Radio 4's Short story section but was considered too long so Rankin converted it into a novel instead. He has received many awards for his work including an OBE in 2002 for his services to literature. The Storyline of the book The book is set in a small Scottish town called Carsden. Whose traditional industry of coal mining was closing down due to it being uneconomic to mine there any ...

Confessions of a Pop Group

Advantages: buried treasure unearthed
Disadvantages: none if you buy it

Almost impossible to approach as a normal pop record ,this is the sound of a group overstretching their muscical ambitions and narrowly missing greatness ,what is certain is that this was not what the British public wanted or expected in 1988,corporate consumerism had entered music like never before and the publics appetite for bland ,sterile ,disposable rubbish was insatiable ,Stock ,Aitken and Waterman reigned supreme and the standards which had been set in the previous two decades had been eroded in the face of big business and had been made to look deeply unfashionable ,this might explain a distinct lack of anything approaching great during that time . So ,this was the climate in which "Confessions of a Pop Group "was conceived ,following on from the Councils least succesful album "The Cost Of Loving ",which displayed a complete ...
