Formed in Canada in 1988 Jim Creeggan, Kevin Hearn, Ed Robertson, Tyler Stewart, and formerly Andy Creeggan and Steven Page are the Barenaked Ladies.
Lots of people get into discover the Barenaked Ladies in their search for great music. Some find them accidently whilst looking for something else entirely. Either way, the Barenaked Ladies music has a broad range of alternative rock and appeals to an extremely varied demograph.
This, their greatest hits album is a great collection of their best work (obviously). It will appeal to current fans for obvious reasons, but it's such an easy appealing listen that many music fans who've never heard the group will enjoy it too.
Using the bands eclectic and light hearted style, the track listing is as follows:
1) The Old Apartment - Mellow rock tune that introduces the album quite nicely. 7/10
2) Falling for the first time - More upbeat, but still light pop rock song with clever lyrics. A good fun song. 9/10
3) Brian Wilson - Incredibly complex and soulful acoustic track. This album has the live version which only adds to the feel of the song A BNL classic. . 10/10
4) One week - This song featured in 10 Things I Hate About You. Crazy, and quite indecipherable summery song. Another classic. 10/10
5) Be my Yoko Ono - Fantastically silly song with a toe tappingly fast acoustic feel. 8/10
6) Alternative Girlfriend - More traditional soft rock fare here results in a decent enough song. 6/10
7) It's only me - A song with a few ups and downs. Something about this song feels like being on some kind of ride. Good song. 7/10
8) If I had a million dollars - Classic BNL song. Bit silly, bit clever, bit amazing. One of the songs that sums up the bands style perfectly. 10/10
9) Call and answer - Really nice low key song. The kind of song that's perfect for those really chilled out moments.
10) Get in line - Neat little ditty that has something of a 50's fairground feel to it. 7/10
11) It's all been done - One of my personal favorite tracks. Big guitar, really upbeat, seriously singable with a great solo. 10/10
12) Jane - Mellow and harmonious, and a quite nice song, but the chorus lets it down a bit. 6/10
13) Lovers in a dangerous time - Folk style song that feels a little bit country. Interesting change of pace. 7/10
14) Pinch me - Hummy acoustic guitar riff that underlays a harmonious soft rock song.
15) Shoebox - Optimistic song, with a nice pace but typical BNL album filler. 6/10
16) What a good boy - Similar kind of song to Brian Wilson, acoustic, soulful and again a live version. Probably on par with Brian Wilson if not quite as epic. 9/10
17) Too little too late - Great guitar riff and drums make this a really cool clap along pop rock song. 8/10
18) Enid - Very BNL style but quite forgettable. Conspicuous by it's placing at the end of the album. 6/10
19) Thanks that was fun - Piano driven song with alot of feeling, but something about it doesn't quite hit the mark. 6/10
Overall, a fantastic album. If you're already a fan and have the albums, chances are you probably have most of these songs, but if you haven't then this is a great place to start.
