“Discovery” is the follow up to the French Duo’s “Homework” album , which was released in 97’. I can only describe their music as strange, very catch and fresh electronic dance music. Discovery was meant to be the best dance album in some time, many don’t agree, I have to ask why? I whole-heartedly agree with the critics.

The album starts with “One More Time” which reached the UK top 5. This track is much more suited to a UK audience and is not as dance like as the rest of the album. The second track, Aerodynamic is much better and has no singing; it really warms you up for the rest of the album.

The next track is their new offering, Digital Love which is ok but is a bit slow. The sound of the album is unique and it really relaxes you and puts you in a happier mood as this track does.

The ‘beats’ start to kick in and you are then launched into the next track, my favourite, “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger”. This is the kind of track you just want to dance to, many different sounds are used in this track and the vocals are very electronic but are brilliant.

“Crescendolls” is next and is a fun but slightly repetitive track. The next track is very slow and boring it is another build up track. “Superheroes” comes next and has a similar feel to “Harder..” it starts with a drum roll and is full of bass and perky electronic sounds.

The album carries on and gets much more repetitive from tracks 8-12. Even though the sounds very crisp and fresh and full of good ‘beats’ I can see why many people don’t like “Discovery”. There are also a few slow tracks, which are on the whole soothing but far to slow and unimaginative. Track 13 is different it has some nice vocals and top lyrics. The last track goes on forever and kicks in with some lovely bass after about 5 minutes. The track would be great if it was shorter but the vocals are again mixed with some great electronic madness.

When you buy the CD you get a Daft Card, which grants you access to their online ‘club’. You can download free mixes, live performances and unreleased tracks. They are similar to the album tracks but are nowhere near as good.

Overall I would recommend listening to a few tracks before buying namely 4 and 7. If you like these you will like the album. The sound is very electronic but has a very unique and happy sound as well as some excellent bass-lines. The songs with vocals are better. The album is full of break-downs and build-ups that’s why it has 14 tracks this makes the good tracks better and makes the album an album not just a bunch of songs stuck together al la ‘Hearsay’. Not all dance music fans will enjoy the album and ‘teeny boppers’ who liked “One More Time” because it was catchy will hate it. I can think of no other band/artist/ DJ who have a similar sound so just try before you buy.
