...to a weekend festival on Clare Island (a tiny island off Ireland), on the boat back it was a perfect autumn evening and the green and red of mayo was conceived with a well known Galway free-spirited mintrel jarir al-majar. Around a year later it became this song. The song is very Irish and starts off with singing with the music coming in towards the end of the first verse. The music is soft and gentle and you can clearly hear all the different instruments. Davy Carton's vocals are softly sung, with a hint of an Irish accent and carry the song well. The lyrics convey Irish scenery and it is clear this is a different kind of music to anything you would hear from England, or that you would imagine Irish music sounding like if your previous experience has only been Boyzone, Westlife or The Corrs! Review of Simply the Songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber - Various Artists by  87degrees

Advantages: Loads of music for your money, wide variety
Disadvantages: I've not seen all the shows

..., listening to the music is a long way from watching people sing, dance and act on stage, but if you like the songs, you'll like this. If you're a major Lloyd Webber fan, have seen every show at least once and own the movie adaptations, why haven't you bought this already? I bought this box set for £8 from HMV, which is really good value for the amount of music you get. It's on Amazon at the moment for about £7, but you will have to pay postage as well. It's on Play.com for £9.99. Looking round to give the price guide, I've just spotted it on HMV.co.uk for £5.99 delivered. Clearly I need to take more care when buying things. Given the amount of music you get for your money, I would definitely recommend Simply the Songs to any fans of musicals.... Read review

Review of Housework Songs Vol.1 - Various Artists by  AJ26

Advantages: Good rhythms to do the housework to, some excellent songs
Disadvantages: Some songs will appeal to some and not to others.

...Housework Songs is a double CD compilation album. The idea is that these songs are all suitable to listen to whilst doing the housework so easing the load and making the dutiful chores a little more enjoyable. On the front cover is a picture of a woman (rather sexist, men do the housework too! At least they do in my house!) singing into her vacuum cleaner. There are 41 songs on the album and there is a good mixture with something for everyone. We have songs from the 1960s including "Pretty Woman", and "Respect", in the 1970s we have "You Sexy Thing" and "American Pie", the 1980s gives us "Fame" and "I Think We're Alone Now", the 1990s gives us "Over My Shoulder"and "Moving on Up" then from the 2000s we have "Spinning Around" and "The Closest Thing To Crazy."
