Doctor - Beenie Man

This musical adventurer will jump on any type of groove, from country & western to ... more

ragtime, even gospel, as in the rousing lead
track, "Gospel Time," complete with huge choral
backing and admonitions like "shake that booty
Jesus gave you!" He's also about forging links to
stateside cousins, as in the remix of "Tell Me,"
featuring New York City radio jock-rapper Angie
Martinez. But dancehall reggae's amazingly
prolific king knows he has to bring it all back to
reggae dancehall, by sticking to clever patwah
lyrics and the sublime "one-drop riddim" pattern
that distinguishes reggae from everything else.
Beenie's breakout "Who Am I?" was the only reggae
track to enter Billboard's '98 R&B and pop charts,
and this imaginatively conceived set of hardcore
dancehall tunes is packed with plenty more
international pop possibilities. --Elena Oumano

The Man Beenie

Advantages: A Great Artist
Disadvantages: Hardly any.

Beenie Man is a well known dancehall artist. He is one of little from the dancehall comunity to have won a Grammy and achive great regonition in many countries. Beenie Man started his music career at the age of ten when he released his great 'Boy Wonder' album. Beenie Man then went quite for a while and then re- released himself in the early 90's, with the big hit ' Who Am I'. Beenies best album to date i think is his latest ' Back To Basics' which features the hit single 'Dude' ( Featuring Shawna a fresh hip hop talent and Ms Ting and new dancehall face). This album shows that Beenie Man has gotten better over the years adn the lyrical content on many songs is very thought provoking. During his career Beenie Man has had the chance to work with many huge stars such as Janet Jackson who he work with on the ' Feel It Boy' single ...

Review of Beenie Man

Has time run out for the Doctor?

Advantages: Good plot, quick read
Disadvantages: Weak characterisation of the Doctor

I recently bought the Special Edition box set of ten new Doctor Who novels from ebay for a very cheap £5, and 'The Clockwise Man' is the first book in the set. It's the second Doctor Who novel that I've read, so I have something to compare it to. It's a good, quick read that should appeal to both adults and children alike. **Blurb** (from back of book) In 1920s London the Doctor and Rose find themselves caught up in the hunt for a mysterious murderer. But not everyone or everything is what they seem. Secrets lie behind locked doors and inhuman killers roam the streets. Who is the Painted Lady and why is she so interested in the Doctor? How can a cat return from the dead? Can anyone be trusted to tell - or even to know - the truth? With the faceless killers closing in, the Doctor and Rose must solve the mystery ...

THE DOCTOR was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.
Beenie Man's roots are planted firmly in reggae's dancehall tradition, but it was his willingness to expand his stylistic parameters that helped make the preceding MANY MOODS OF MOSES a breakthrough album for him. There's more of a focus on straight-ahead dancehall on THE DOCTOR, but, as one of the genre's acknowledged masters, Beenie Man makes the most of it. On tunes like "Let Him Go," he pushes carnal boasts to a new height by encouraging unsatisfied women to forsake their lovers for him.
The simple, driving beats provide maximum danceability, and Beenie Man's tongue is as nimble as ever as he navigates his way through kinetic rhymes that would leave the most skilled rappers in a state of disarray. Beenie Man can't resist tweaking the formula a bit though, as on the opening cut "Gospel Time," whose spiritual feel brings the dance hall to the church, as our hero exhorts us to "Shake that booty in the name of the Lord." Who could resist such an offer?
Album Reviews Rap Pages (10/99, pp.146-8) - "...followers of the culture already know all of these songs, which have saturated the airwaves....It's the onslaught of rhythm-fire from some of dance hall's hottest producers...that gives this album a hardcore edge..." - Rating: C
Spin (8/99, p.155) - 7 (out of 10) - "...Brace yourself for scorchers....the sheer spectacle of dancehall's reigning hitmaker catching rapid-fire wreck....keep in mind that hardcore reggae...makes the best crossover."
