Based on one of Walter Scott's most melodramatic novels, what is arguably Donizetti's best ... more
tragic opera is here presented in its French version,Lucie de Lammermoor. The hapless Lucia (Patrizia Ciofi) tries to refuse the marriage to a minister that will rescue her family's fortunes in favour of her beloved, the family's worst enemy Edgard (Roberto Alagna). Predictably this all ends in many deaths and the audience's tears. Evelina Pido and the Orchestre Nationale de Lyon tear through the fairly unsubtle score with considerable brio and they and the cast are admirable in the opera's quieter more thoughtful moments--the famous Act Two sextet and Lucia's mad scene, in which Ciofi is solidly excellent rather than deeply memorable. Alagna turns in his usual high-gloss performance as Edgard and manages to make his final aria more moving than the quality of the piece deserves. This is an idiomatic and effective performance in a solid made-for-TV production, albeit one that never comes across as notably original. On the DVD:Lucie de Lammermooris presented on disc in 16:9 ration with Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS or LPCM stereo sound options. It has subtitles in English, German, French, Spanish and Italian. --Roz Kaveney

Advantages: Gorgeous Smell Disadvantages: A tad expensive
I bought this product myself, whilst going on holiday in the duty free section. Part of the reason for this is because it is very expensive, especially the eau de parfum. This is a lovely fragrance that is sweet smelling that after one spray lasts for ages, which is why I think it is worth the money spent because it means you have to use less of the perfume, which with some others you have to spray numerous times, over the course of the day in order to still smell it. Whereas, with this one, that isn't necessary.
However, I recommend buying the eau de toilette if you don't want to spend as much money, but again, it may mean you have to use more of it.
Buy this product if you feel like splurging and treating yourself. It also makes a really nice gift and in my experience, lasts a significant amount of time. I think this is ...
Advantages: Funny, witty, well written, good likeable characters Disadvantages: The character of James!
't actually read Heat, so I haven't read anything she has written in the magazine but I thought she is young and probably has a good idea of what people want to read these days, so it made me feel a lot more positive about the book in general.
The story is based around a character, not surprisingly called Lucy McCarthy. Lucy is about to head on holiday to Australia for the wedding of her two best friends Sam and Molly for 2 weeks when the whole thing is jeopardised before she even takes off from British soil. When turning her mobile phone off in the cabin of the plane, she notices she has a new text message, and decides to quickly read it. However, the text isn't the text she was expecting to receive...it is from someone claiming that they have just slept with Lucy's boyfriend James in her bed. Obviously Lucy is stuck on a plane and can't do ...
Advantages: chick-lit at it's best, unputdownable, good characters, well written, funny, not too predictable Disadvantages: you'll be sad when it ends
and my man split up, and was still reading it three weeks later when I met up with him and he asked me what I was reading these days. The book was only about two hundred pages long so I was pretty embarrassed to admit I was still reading the same book I'd been reading last time he asked!
So I know this sounds completely irrelevant but there IS in fact a point to this little story I am telling. For I HAVE read a few books in the last few weeks but with little enthusiasm. I've not even managed to read the new Harry Potter book, which has been sitting on my desk for the past two weeks now. But the moment I started reading "Lucy in the Sky", I was hooked. I finished it in two days, which is a record for me at the moment, and I loved every minute of it.
I didn't realise this until I bought the book but Paige Toon, the author, is actually ...
