Although they've experienced a resurgent return to fame with Americam Idiot, Dookie still remains, in my opinion, their finest work. The album kicks off as it means to go on with the fast paced punk rock of Burnout. The lyrics also set the tone for the rest of the album, talking about apathy, bordom and as the title suggests, burnout. Having a Blast and Chump continue the mood of bored and angry youth with Chump segueing into one of the highpoints of the album, the instumental of Longview. Here Greenday show that they're decent musicians as well as good songwriters. Other highlights of the album are Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case, She, and When I come around. Throughout riffs, melody and energy are in abundance. But the lyrics never really energe from their anger and pessimism. Overall this is a great album.
