Firstly, as I'm updating this op, I'm going to tell you a wee bit about the Pixies. They are Black Francis (AKA Frank Black amongst other things), singer and writer/ occasional guitarist; Kim Deal, bassist, singer and writer; Joey Santiago, lead guitarist and backing singer; and David Lovering, drummer and occasional singer. AS you can see, they are your traditional rock four piece set up, but there music is so much more, exploring areas feared to tread by many before them, and thankfully not heavy enough to be nu-metal.
Doolittle is, as are most Pixies albums, different to all the other Pixies releases. This album in particular is quite dark and sombre, with the expected exceptions. It uses the rocky style of the Pixies, yet incorporates the early inspiration that was to become grunge at the hands of Nirvana. Kurt himself has said he was influenced by Black Francis and his motley crew.
Track Listings: 1. Debaser 2. Tame 3. Wave of Mutilation 4. I Bleed 5. Here Comes your man 6. Dead 7. Monkey Gone to Heaven 8. Mr Grieves 9. Crackity Jones 10. La La Love You 11. No. 13 Baby 12. There Goes My Gun 13. Hey 14. Silver 15. Gouge Away
The songs on the album are all outstanding, especially due to their variety. The opener to the album is 'Debaser', the most successful Pixies track to date, with it's poppy theme. On a similar note, it contains 'Here Comes Your Man', which is cheese pure and simple, but brilliantly done.
However, most of the album has more sombre tones. For example, 'Hey', with it's minimalist approach to instrumentation, and 'There Goes My Gun', which manages to make sombre pop. But, the most outstanding track on the album is probably 'Monkey Gone To Heaven', with it's great instrumentation, bizarre lyrics, and that Pixies style finishing touch with Black Francis wailing away.
Considering this album was released in 1989, it's hardly dated at all. That's probably got something to do with the fact that they were never a particularly 'in' band, so have just made a place in time that is their own.
This is a great album if you're in a not too happy mood, as it has uplifting tracks, coupled with songs that make you just sit and think. It should also suit many of your musical tastes, incorporating most sorts of guitar music at one point or another, so go and give it a listen.
*This is an old op that needed updating, as I've been looking through my old ones and realising they could be so much better, so thanks for reading!!

My bestest Pixies record by far, great summer listening! I was so obsessed with it back in 1997 when I first got fully into the Pixies that I considered getting a "13" tattooed on my chest to honour the line in No. 13 Baby about a "tattooed tit"... good thing I didn't, or I just would have FELT like a tit >:) Cheers, P$
