Advantages Advantages One of the best debut albums ever

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

The term 'classic' is used very freely and cheaply these days so I'm not going to use it. In fact, I'm going a stage further by saying that this is not arguably but easily one of the greatest albums of all time. Firstly, it's hard to believe that this is not a greatest hits album when actually it is a debut. Released in 1967 with much of the material having been written earlier, it is stunningly innovative for its time. Mixing driving rock, blues, jazz, Latin, psychadelic and eastern mysticism, it must have blown the mind of even the most acid jaded hippy. Finally, unlike a lot of old stuff ... more

Advantages Advantages Some nice songs, powerful lyrics and vocals

Disadvantages Disadvantages a few fillers and Jims untimely death.

THE DOORS - THE DOORS ----------------------- The debut album by this amazing American rock band must go down as one of the best debut releases of all time. In 1965 a group of students from the University College of Los Angeles(UCLA), started what was to be a turbulent ride through rock and roll. These students took the name 'The Doors' after a poem/book entitled the doors of perception. Led by Poet/singer Jim Morrison, the doors brought a new sound to the 60's, with a dark brooding version of rock, with intense poetic lyrics and music that was never scared to change from the normal poppy ... more

Advantages Advantages Different styles, lyrical imagery, outstanding playing

Disadvantages Disadvantages One or two throwaway tracks

With the release of their first album in 1967, the Doors burst upon the American music scene with a sound that was unique and unlike anything the world had heard before. This sound was the product of the various musical influences on the individual members of this band. Ray Manzarek was a classically trained pianist; Robbie Krieger was a classical and flamenco guitar student; John Densmore idolized the great jazz drummers; and Jim Morrison had no musical training at all--his forte was poetry and a fine hand for turning a lyric. The band didn't have a bass guitarist; in studio sessions they ... more

Advantages Advantages Every track is a classic

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None!

This classic, totally outstanding album, first released in 1967 on the Elektra label is, undoubtedly, one of the upmost impressive, compelling recordings in rock music history. It is also most certainly one of the very best first-outings by a rock group. Indeed The Doors were one of the most exciting, influential and controversial rock bands of the swinging sixties with the legendary genius Jim Morrison as The Doors lead singer, Ray Manzarek controlling the spiralling electric organ, John Denmore on drums and Robby Krieger on guirtar. The Doors never actually recruited a bass player so the ... more

    Advantages Advantages Groundbreaking debut

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None for me

Anyone who reads my reviews regularly will know that my musical tastes lean towards pop. So what am I doing reviewing a Doors album? Well, I am actually a fan of the band, mainly because of friends at uni who played their music, which really grew on me. The band, made up of singer Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robbie Krieger and drummer John Densmore, took their name from Aldous Huxley’s book The Doors of Perception, which is itself a Blake quotation. Any band inspired by poetry is likely to win my interest! The Doors’ self-titled debut album was released in 1967 on the ... more
