Compared with the songs on Telarc's Robert Johnson collection, many of Charley Patton's ... more
are little known. Still, you'd expectDown the Dirt Roadto have made more out of the inspiring work of that extraordinary Mississippi blues singer and guitarist. Patton's lighter numbers come off well: Steve James lends a jolly vaudeville air to "Elder Greene Blues" and "Shake It and Break It", and Guy Davis inventively recasts "Some of These Days", with harmonica and banjo, as a jog-along western-film number. Of the weightier blues pieces Charlie Musselwhite's "Pea Vine Blues" and Snooky Pryor's "Pony Blues" are acceptable and Corey Harris's "Moon Going Down" an accurate replica. Joe Louis Walker's slide-accompanied "Sugar Mama" is excellent but belongs to some other project--neither the song nor the style has any relation to Patton's music. Half as much can be said for guitarist Kid Bangham's sleepy instrumental version of "Some Summer Day"--at least the song is Patton's--and for the final track, a medley of "Down the Dirt Road Blues" and "When Your Way Gets Dark" sung by Colleen Sexton like a lacklustre Eva Cassidy, and as unsatisfying a way to spend nine-and-a-half minutes as can readily be imagined.--Tony Russell

Advantages: Loads of Phil Collins songs Disadvantages: Loads of Phil Collins songs messed up
. Add a few scratches and a rap and you have this
Gotta Hold Over Me - Coko. Poor song. In my opinion Coko isnt the most gifted singer and you can tell on this track. Not one of Phils greatest and not one of Coko's either
I Dont Care Anymore - Kelis. Produced by the Neptunes, this is a harsh track with an 'I Hate You So Much Right Now' shouty feel to it. You would either love or hate this
Cant Turn Back The Years - Joe. Not to disimilar to the original and it works. The best track on the album, Joes voices gives this tune so much credit. It really does work. Quality
Do You Remember - Debelah Morgan. Poor again, she has a good voice and it comes through but the production is not great and its a big let down
Against All Odds - Montell Jordan. This is worse than the Westlife version. Its just not very good
One More NIght ...
Advantages: Good rhythms to do the housework to, some excellent songs Disadvantages: Some songs will appeal to some and not to others.
"You've got the power to know, you're indestructible" and with this CD you can get any job done.
Cutting Crew - (I Just) Died In Your Arms - Time to dry the dishes and sing along "I just died in your arms tonight, must have been something you said" either that or it was my terrible singing!
Mike And The Mechanics - Over My Shoulder - Another slower song, time to dust down those lampshades and sing "Looking back over my shoulder, I can see that look in your eye, I never dreamed it could be over." And soon it will be over!
Don McLean - American Pie - This is a lively tune so its good for doing the vacuuming (providing you have it on your MP3 player or you wont hear it over the vacuum cleaner). Sing to the dirt "Bye bye Miss American pie, drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry."
Lene Marlin - Sitting Down Here -This song ...
Advantages: Evokes a rainbow of feelings, brilliant lyrics and great musicality Disadvantages: Not enough length to some of the songs, he could have pushed it further
paced and slightly jazzy, with some interesting piano going off in the background. Lyrics are moving, and humorously middle class at points, but thats only cause I'm a northerner :) 8/10
3. I'm Alright Now: Another slightly epic strings accompanied piece, with tragic lyrics and a large buildup as with track one. A great song in my opinion, one of the best on the album, puts me in a strange motivated mood whenever I listen to it. 9/10
4. Song For The Road: A real masterpiece :D Piano led and extremely emotional as the song progresses. The lyrics are so simple but so wonderful, and are sang with great passion and emphasis, accompanied by a very interestingly arranged brass section, helping to build the song up slightly before it winds slowly down. 10/10
5. Train: Not my favorite song on the album, but certainly not dull or filler ...
