If, like me, you've heard "Apologize" the song which seems to have permanently lodged itself onto radio and charts around the world, then you probably know of One Republic. A band based in California, their debut album 'Dreaming Out Loud' is sure to be a hit based on the first single alone.
01. Say (All I Need) - Great opener with an impressive drum beat toward the end which brings an otherwise average ballad to life. 02. Mercy - A nice enough ballad, but fails to make any impact. 03. Stop and Stare - Beautiful ballad, brought together nicely by lead singer Ryan Tedder's vocals. This is the bands second single and has a catchy enough chorus to make it another huge hit for them. 04. Apologize - This is the original version of the song, which Timbaland later remixed into a monster hit. Gone is the piano opener, which is traded in for some beautiful string work. This
still has an R&B beat, and isn't overly different from Timbaland's version, however this version has a little bit more substance. 05. Goodbye, Apathy - A nice ballad which opens with shakers. Has some nice piano work. Doesn't really build up to anything, a gentle listen. 06. All Fall Down - Opens with guitars and a pretty string arrangement. This song talks about being there for someone "whenever your world starts crashing down." 07. Tyrant - Impressive piano opener, with Tedder's voice bringing the song quickly to life. A drum kicks in and makes this song one of the more uptempo tracks on the album. The lyrics have a rebellious streak throughout: "Don't justify me." 08. Prodigal - Haunting vocals, over a quiet musical arrangement, which gets more involved as the song reaches its climax. 09. Won't Stop - Yet another ballad, which fails to make any impact. 10. All We Are - As above. 11. Someone To Save You - Musically, this opens as being perhaps the 'lightest' song on the album, a well needed respite from the doom and gloom of the rest. However, it soon follows the rest of the album as Tedder sings "Oh my, look how your bright star's faded so. How much can you take?" 12. Come Home - Piano and vocals make this a pretty little number. A nice love song. 13. Dreaming Out Loud (bonus) - Being the title track from the album, I'm confused as to why this is a bonus track, nevertheless this song opens with an interesting arrangement for the verse, however soon heads to familiar territory for the chorus which is a shame because it starts off so well. 14. Something's Not Right Here (bonus) - A ballad which, again, is pretty forgettable once its over. 15. Apologize (Remix) - By now, if you haven't heard this song you must live under a rock. Its actually surprising how little Timbaland did to this song to 'remix' it as apart from taking away some strings and adding in his 'eh eh eh' there is little to distinguish it from the original on this album. However, whatever Timbaland touches at the moment seems to turn into gold so I can't fault him for that.
Overall - This album sounded promising with the singles "Apologize" and "Stop and Stare," both of which are the stand out tracks on the album. Everything else fails to tread any new ground which is a shame because Tedder definitely has a knack of writing some huge hits (case in point; "Apologize" and Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love"), and he has a nice enough voice which helps bring some of the more generic songs to life. However that isn't enough to really give "Dreaming Out Loud" any long term impact on the charts, though saying that I'm sure it will be a big enough hit based on the success of the singles alone.

Advantages: Some very good, mature pop songs on One Republic's debut album Disadvantages: A few corny lyrics and repetitive tracks don't quite make it brilliant
