Dropsonde marks in a way a return to the rhythmical elements that characterised his first two albums; only that this time the (not that many in number actually) beats are quite different from the typical techno derived monolithic rhythm. That's because the inspiration (and quite a lot of samples) comes from jazz music, which works perfectly in compliance with the ambient material. The music on Dropsonde is quite gentle ... ...not dominate the melodies and the ambience but rather doesn't leave them stray . Don't imagine breakbeats of course, the drums are basically loops of mid tempo jazz beats with some exceptions like Daphnis 26 where the old school techno beat sort of returns from the past. The best moments of the album are probably in songs like "Birds Flapping their Wings" where the jazz feeling of the beat and the "blue" piano chord meet unprecedently with glacial ...
