James, or Aphex Twin, or AFX, or Polygon Window, or whatever he feels like calling himself has always, since the release of Selected Ambient Works 85-92, been regarded as the bees bollocks as far as IDM (intelligent dance music, a genre AFX has scoffed at in the past) is concerned. And this is not unjustified. His 'ambient' stuff, although rather dated now, is still great to listen to as something chilled and impressive. He's been fantastically new in other albums since. As an example, on the Windowlicker EP he included a picture of his face in the music. And by this I mean if you pass the music through a spectrum analyser then a spooker picture of James will bee seen. It's this 'how the hell did he do that?' attitude linked with the quality of the vast body of his work, that proceeds this release. Unfortunately this work does not really, as a whole, seem anything majorly new - just treading water. There are moments of greatness, however, in my personal favourite 54 Cymru Beats. Also, although other critics have had a go at his Satie-esque piano excursions, I think they are bloody great taken out of context. This is something which is general about the album. It is fan-bleedin'-tastic if the Twin's legacy was forgotten, and in that sense it's great as a record to get into Aphex, but with that good good stuff behind him this is a little dissapointing. Check out the Richard D. James Album, or Come to Daddy/Girlboy EPS, and don't forget Windowlicker, of course.
Advantages: Different, Interesting Listening Disadvantages: Sets a fairly odd mood, Too much filler
Druqks is in my opinion not one of the best releases from Aphex. It is very minimal and experimental, and at least 70% of the album is dark, sinister out of tune piano noises and creepy ambient sounds that just make you feel a little uneasy. 2 CDs of it is a bit much. There are a couple of good tunes on there, with a similar creepy vibe but with some nice fast drums and cool glitchy noises. I'd probably reccomend this album to die hard aphex fans, ... ...other Aphex Twin albums are slightly more accessible to everyone. A fairly interesting listen, although the good tunes don't fully make up for the amount of tracks of creepy noise. Fairly original, but definately the kind of album you would listen to at home alone - certainly not a party starter. ...

Album Notes
Aphex Twin is Richard D. James. It's tempting to imagine Richard James holed up in his basement for years on end, concocting foaming aural experiments to try out on unsuspecting listeners, and he certainly does little to dispel that image here. His past musical output has varied from the gentle but weird, to the baffling, to the ghastly, and with DRUKQS he manages to combine all the aforementioned in a compelling yet unsettling mix that is never less than fascinating. The tracks are listed on the booklet, but not necessarily in the same order they appear on the album, and moreover James seems to have developed his own language somewhere along the way, so we're left to our own devices to figure things out. Like some demented baseball pitcher, James constantly varies his stylings, now pastoral acoustic piano, now impossibly fast breakbeat techno garage, now weird hollers from behind the basement door. He keeps the listener constantly off balance (at one point including a Stephen Hawking-like voice reading snippets of Goldilocks and the Three Bears); it's a wild, strange ride, but it's consistently fascinating to hear what comes next.
