<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Sean Paul 2nd Album<<<<<<<<
"Dancehall reggae is not just about the killer riddims; people the world over love the way we speak. This music is here to kick up the bass and burn up the place. I'm talking on behalf of all dancehall."
Sean Paul
*************************A bit about Sean Paul****************
Born Sean Paul Henriques in Kingston, Jamaica on January 8, 1975, Sean Paul's lineage truly reflects Jamaica's national motto, "Out Of Many, One People." He is known as a dancehall artist and was scoring hit singles in Jamaica from the year 1996, and is one of the greatest dancehall artists there is. He has mixed parentage, born to a Portuguese Dad and Jamaican Mum, Sean Paul has had an early interest in the music of dancehall/reggae/ r n b. Such artists as Lt. Stitchie, Major Worries, and Supercat were important influences on his career and music choice.
His career began in 1996, Sean Paul's release of "Baby Girl" was the first of a series of undeniable reggae
smashes that rocked Jamaica, quickly establishing a solid base for Sean amongst the island's dancehall massive. A couple of years later his fan base expanded to USA and the UK, among other countries with his new hit single "Gimme The Light" a total scorcher. It was then on made clear this young, vibrant, promising artist was going to be a huge success with many more hits to come.
Shortly after he produced the album dutty rock which was a record hit success, he expanded his music on an even international level playing at countries such as China, other parts of the Caribbean, European etc.
Sean was recently named best reggae Artist of the Year at the MOBO Awards in London, and he also garnered a High Times magazine 2002 Doobie Award for the song Gimme The Light.
*************What I thought of the tracks***************************
The album started off with the Dutty Rock Intro, which was just basically someone but I am not too sure who introducing Sean Paul, its short and to the point, but it could have improved for example Sean Paul starting off the album or even having a mellow tune to start off with.
Shout is a good next track to put on the album it is mellow and sets the album up. I would give this track 5/10.
Gimme the Light exceeds the negative aspects of the intro, with its upbeat and funky beat that makes you want to hit the dancehall. A great tune, an old favourite I must say to play on the dance floor. This track is what I like to call a real raga / r n b hit. I would give this track 10/10.
A couple of highlights in the album "like glue" and "get busy" are great listening songs, although it might be worthy to point out some of the lyrics you might not be able to understand, never less they are good tunes that make you want to listen to them over and over again. I would give these tracks 10/10.
Baby boy, as the name describes is just that oh boy a fab good track that features B. The artists both mix well with each other and balances out the tune. I can only desribe it as a sort of dancehall stroke R and B feeling. The video for this song is good, the choreology is done brilliantly. I would give this track 8/10.
Next tracks in the album are Top of the Game Ganja Breed and Concrete. They are ok, but I find them slightly lacking in something alright cant really describe what exactly, maybe something like a bit more of R and B is needed in the song. Maybe too much reggae dancehall in the song, not too mention the lyrics go slightly too fast. I would give these tracks 6/10.
More upbeat tunes in the album are I'm Still in Love With You and International Affair. Both these tracks have a slight mellow feeling to them and a nice head-nodding beat which is the background of the song. The second tune has a very mellow sound to it and this is portrayed by the delivery and beat. I would give these tracks 8/10.
Can You Do the Work - well how can I describe this tune - basically its one of my favourites (among the rest!!! As you can see I have quite a few!!!) This song features Ce'Cile, they go really well together in this song and makes for a more upbeat, nodding to the words tune. I would give this track 10/10. (yeah you guessed it!!!)
Punkie and Punkie (Espanol)is a spanish-sung song and is not a dancehall tune. It clashes with the rest of the album but in a good way it is upbeat, different and funky. Great tune to listen to at parties, on beaches and at home. A huge hit around the Caribbean and in Latin hip-hop clubs in the Northeast. I would give these tracks 10/10.
My Name , Junkin' Punny, bubble, Shake That Thing and Esa Loca are all upbeat songs that make you want to dance and feel the music. I would give these tracks 8/10.
Gimme the Light [Pass the Dro-Voisier Remix] was the album's lead-off single that led off to greater things. Another upbeat, excellent, fab beat, a rating I could not give any higher. I would give this track 10/10.
************Recommendations*********
I would recommend this album to anyone and everyone. It is a fresh, upbeat and funky album with some great tunes with not so great tunes thrown in.
It can be bought from all good stores such as Virgin, HMV. The internet such as Ebay, Amazon etc.
It is priced around £8.00.
